Frederick E. Straus, known to many as Pat, was stoic, practical, entrepreneurial and loving in his own way. Born in Newark, NJ in 1928 and raised on Reckless Place in Red Bank, he graduated from Red Bank High School and the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He served at Fort Monmouth in the Army and then returned to Red Bank. He was a homebody that did not stray far from familiar territory, optimistically invested in its growth.
He met Adrienne Miller of Long Branch, NJ on a blind date in 1954 and married her in 1955. They were happily married for almost 70 years until her death in late 2024.
In the 1960’s Pat and 9 other men with vision began purchasing commercial real estate in Red Bank. The group was known as The Ten Company, an entity which still exists to this day.
Pat, Adrienne and their family hosted the annual Thanksgiving for nearly 50 years. They loved this holiday and were reluctant to give it up, until 2023, when they finally acknowledged they couldn’t host 25 people anymore. He and Adrienne had a wonderful social life. Pool parties, dining, nights and theater in New York City, bridge, tennis, travel, Mets and Giants games, even trips to 4 Super Bowls together. Over time his wife was able to convince Pat to improve his wardrobe; he was well dressed daily until a week before his death.
Together with Adrienne they opened a retail clothing shop called Junior Bazaar on White Street in Red Bank, which later relocated to Broad Street in Red Bank a building he and Adrienne purchased in the 1950’s and still own. They employed staff and made buying decisions following clothing trends recommended by the buying office in NY. Eventually, Pat opened his own shop in Manasquan NJ, while Adrienne managed the Red Bank location and he managed the finances of both stores. They were true life and business partners.
Pat is survived by his two loving daughters Hindell and Deborah, four grandchildren, Ariel Winkley, Micah Grossman, Henry Eisenstein and Ly Eisenstein, plus two great grandchildren and the many others whose lives he touched.
