We extend our condolences to the Stern family and Kathryn. We live across the street from Larry and Kathryn in the Polo Club in Boca Raton,Florida. We will miss our friend Larry. Larry and Kathryn are wonderful people.

My sympathy to the Stern family.  Our families were so close, that it took awhile as a kid to know that Aunt Ida was not a relative.  The Lippman and Stern families were treasures in "old" Asbury Park. My father was Larry's scout leader, and I remember Larry recalling all the antics that went on at the meetings. Larry was the troop treasurer.  May Larry rest in peace.

Very sorry for your loss.  I remember living across the street from the Sterns in Deal in the 60's.  They were wonderful people.

Larry was my friend for more than 60 years. NJMTA and ATA and a little golf. He and my dad worked togeather in the old days to make our industry what it is today. We will miss him, as he is the end of that generation. Rocque D. Dameo  and family

On behalf of the members of the New Jersey Motor Truck Association we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Stern family on their loss.

We'd like to share our memories of Mr. Stern.

He founded Sterns Transport in 1948 following a brief career as an accountant. In a 2004 NJMTA interview, Larry noted that he wasn't sorry that he switched to the motor carrier field. 

Larry Stern holds a place in the history of NJMTA serving as President from 1966-1968.  The present location of NJMTA headquarters was purchased under his presidency. He led a committee for the building fund. According to Mr. Stern, “The committee worked diligently and unselfishly to achieve our goal. If for no other reason, 1966 would be a red- letter year in our 52 year history because it marked the period in which we translated a dream into reality.”

In 1968, under his guidance, the association signed a contract with the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training to administer a program to attract mechanic apprentices to the state's the trucking industry in a move to help members meet the growing scarcity of mechanics. He was also the founder and a trustee of the association's Group Insurance Trust.

In 1978 Larry was honored by association as its Man of the Year. According to Larry “this was the highlight of my affiliation with the association”. He couldn't get over the fact that over 1,000 people attend the dinner to honor him.

Larry Stern's contribution and support of NJMTA will never be forgotten.
