Louise Sugarman, formerly of Erdenheim, Pa., passed away peacefully on May 18 in Washington D.C. Louise grew up in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., the daughter of Benson and Anne Newberg and the sister of Marjorie. As a child, she was surrounded by an extended family, including her grandmother Fanny Weissman, who helped raise her. She attended A.B. Davis High School in Mt. Vernon, and graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University in 1949 with a degree in romance languages. Louise was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Robert Sugarman, who died in 2008. They lived in West Allenhurst, N.J., and Erdenheim and Plymouth Meeting, Pa., and were married for 57 years. Louise had a spirited personality, an infectious sense of joy and fun, and a deep belief in the power of friendships and family love.
She was a devoted and talented homemaker, and the mother of four children, Frederic, Steven, Carole and Joseph. She relished her life as a mother and grandmother, and had six grandchildren—Benjamin, Andrew, Julie, Anna, Bella and Sadie. She is also survived by daughter-in-laws Lisa Sugarman and Sonya Sugarman, and son-in-law Mark Pelesh. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, 2130 Highway 35, in Ocean, N.J.
