Ludwig “Lou” Selikowitz (1930-2022) peacefully passed away surrounded by love on August 15, 2022. Born in Czechoslovakia, Lou immigrated to Pittsfield Massachusetts with his parents Morris and Julia Selikowitz at the tender age of 3 months. The Selikowitz family moved to New Brunswick, NJ where the family began work at the family bakery known as The City Bakery - a bakery specializing in Jewish delicacies.
Lou was a graduate of New Brunswick High School who excelled in basketball and many other sports. Lou went on to attend Pfeiffer College in NC where he received a basketball scholarship. Upon graduation Lou served in the United States Army based in Fort Dix, NJ.
Meeting his Latin lover Doris Nydia Pomales of the Dominican Republic, the couple married and settled in Bradley Beach, NJ to raise their family. He was a loving father to his three children Peter, Paul, and Ruth. Lou taught Physical Education and Mathematics. He was a beloved basketball coach for many years. Summers were spent teaching swimming at the community pool and running canteen dances. The family moved to Jackson, NJ and Lou began his career teaching and coaching at Carl Sandberg Middle school in Old Bridge NJ. Summers were spent in the Catskills at Kutsher’s Sports Academy coaching and playing beside such greats as: Walt “Clyde” Frasier, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Dr. J Erving just to name of few.
An avid cruiser, Lou and his wife Doris cruised 52 times, loving each and every port they visited. Upon retirement in 1993, Lou began painting with vigor and to date has almost 100 paintings. It truly was his retirement niche. Lou is remembered with gratitude and love by his son, Peter and his wife Minerva Rogers, daughter Ruth Stillwaggon and her husband Paul Stillwaggon, grandson John Rafael Stillwaggon and Granddaughter Celeste Stillwaggon. He was the dear brother to Charlotte Roth and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Please join us in paying tribute to Lou Selikowitz on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at 11:00 am at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels 2130 Highway 35 South, Ocean, NJ 07712. Interment will follow at Beth El Cemetery, Neptune.
Shiva will be observed after the service at the Stillwagon residence.
