Nancy Steinfield Avergun, 80, of Toms River died Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 at Monmouth Medical Center. She was born in Brooklyn. She moved to Brick Township in 1960, and later to the Greenbriar Woodlands development in Toms River.
Mrs. Avergun ended her 31 year real estate career as a Broker of Record for US Home Corp., Freehold. In the 1960’s, she earned her pilot’s license and became a member of the Ninety-Nine Club, an association of women pilots. She flew cross country in the Powder Puff Derby with her 2 best friends, Alma and Claire. An avid bowler in her youth, she later took up golf. In her retirement she loved to travel and was an accomplished artist and sculptor. Mrs. Avergun was a member of the Island Heights Guild, and the Greenbriar Woodlands Book Club, Investment Club and Golf Mixed League.
Surviving are her husband Jerome Avergun; a daughter: Scott “Scotti” Woolf and her husband Dave; 2 sons: Mark Steinfield and Charles “Chip” Steinfield, PhD. and his wife Susan; 6 grandchildren: Daniel, Jaclyn, Adam, William, Michael and Katherine and 2 great-grandchildren: Brody and Cole. Also surviving are 2 stepdaughters: Jill Bloom and Donna Webber and her husband Ned; a step-son: David Avergun and his wife Jodi; 6 step-grandchildren: Rachel, Alyssa, Eric, Marc, Ilana and Michael; 2 sisters: Barbara Marcus and Patricia Bellefontaine; and a brother Paul “Pete” Markell. She was predeceased by her brother Donald Markell.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 5th at 10:00 am at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels, 1300 Vermont Avenue (@Route 70), Lakewood, followed by interment at B’Nai Abraham Memorial Park, Union.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ocean County Artists Guild at Island Heights. Shiva will be observed Thursday after the funeral at Jerome Averguns home, Toms River.
