Seymour Rachles passed on November 13, 2013, the 13th day of his 91st year, after a long illness. He died peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born and raised in Passiac, NJ, Seymour lived in Northern New Jersey prior to moving to the Shore area in 1976.
Seymour lived a vivacious colorful life, having served in the Coast Guard as a young man during World War II and moving on with ambition to found Boulevard Fuel Company, which was later acquired by the Hess Oil Company, subsequently Amerada Hess Corporation. From that point forward, Seymour’s career with Hess spanned the better part of fifty years, during which time he served as Head of Distributor Sales, East Coast, US. As a man dedicated to his career, he devoted not only his time but also his energy and caring for his colleagues as well as customers near and far.
For many years Seymour was an active member of Temple Beth El (currently known as Torat-El) serving as Vice President and long time board member. He also was a member of the Elberon Bathing Club and multiple other organizations, including B’nai B’rith.
A man who was loved by all who came to know him, Seymour is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Schletter-Rachles, his two daughters, Robyn Dunn and Vivien Lewit, his grandchildren, Madyson Nucci, Sascha Lewit and Sage Lewit, his two son-in-laws, Kevin Dunn and Peter Lewit and his step-grandchildren Kyle Dunn and Casey Dunn. Always the life of a party, Seymour had countless dear friends, too many to be named, that have been and will continue to be extended family to Gloria and the children.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, November 15, 2013, at Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapel, 2130 Highway 35, Ocean, NJ 07712.
