Sheldon G. Leibow

Sheldon G. Leibow, 90, of Tallahassee, FL passed away peacefully on Monday, May 14, 2018. Sheldon was raised in Jamaica Estates, Queens, NY, the only child of Rose (Hoffman) and Daniel Leibow. He went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania and then to NYU for his doctorate in medicine. He served time in the Navy as Lieutenant Commander during the post Korean war period. He returned to open up a pediatric partnership practice in Perth Amboy, NJ. In 1963 he married his wife, Lois. Eventually he opened his own practice in Woodbridge, NJ from which he retired in 1990. Over the years, he was on staff at Mount Sinai Hospital, NY, Staten Island Hospital, NY, and served as medical director for Woodbridge Health and Human Services for a short time. He resided in Woodbridge, NJ for almost 20 years and then Monmouth Beach, NJ for about a decade. In 1999, Sheldon officially retired to Florida with his wife. While in Florida he was an Ombudsman for a short time serving Leon County. He proudly committed time to Meals on Wheels, volunteered to feed homeless residents at The Shelter, amongst many other places, and volunteered at the Animal Shelter. Sheldon was an avid animal lover and took in many homeless pets over the years. He enjoyed going to temple, reading, doing research, visits with friends and family, and watching Gomer Pyle.

Sheldon is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lois Applebaum. He leaves behind a son Philip and his wife Lisa, a daughter Frances and her husband Gerardo LaMorte, a son Brian, daughter in law Lisa Ketchum Leibow, his 5 grandchildren, Grant, Jordan, Justin, Spencer, and Amanda, and his cousins Renee and Lawrence Hoffman.

Services will be held on Thursday, May 17 at 11:30am at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ under the direction of Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals on Wheels Elder Care Services, Inc., 2518 W. Tennessee St., Tallahassee, FL 32304, 850-921-5554, the Leon County Humane Society, or any charity of your choice. You may also volunteer at any place that needs help in your community in his memory.

Brian, I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was always so sweet. I always looked for him when he had an appointment with the doctors I work for so that we could chat. When your mom was with him he was so caring and attentive with her. They were an adorable couple.
