Shirley Braunstein Goldberg, 100 years old, died of natural causes at her home in Tinton Falls, NJ on March 15, 2024. Born in Manhattan, NY on June 9, 1923, she was the second of two children born to Meyer and Fannie (nee Fleishman) Braunstein. The family moved to Brooklyn, NY where she attended James Madison High. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Stanley Asher Goldberg in 1944 while Stan was serving in the U.S. Army. During World War II Shirley worked in New York as a draftsperson at Bell Laboratories.
After living in Wabash, IN and New Martinsville, WV while Stan worked as a chemical plant inspector for the federal government, the family settled for 8 years in Williamsport PA, then moved to Bel Air MD in 1960.
Shirley was admired and loved by many while living in Bel Air, where she enjoyed a fulfilling career serving as Registrar at Harford Community College. Also involved in her community, she volunteered for the League of Women Voters and the Harford County SCAT program. In 2004. Shirley relocated to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls, NJ where she lived for nearly 20 years. A talented seamstress, she also loved design, visual arts, theater, and classical music. To all who knew her, Shirley was a model of warmth and social grace, gifted in the art of conversation, and a loyal friend.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1996 and by her older sister Ruth Kronstadt in 1960. She is survived by her two sons, Steven Matthew Goldberg (Marianne) of Severna Park, MD and Richard Robert Goldberg (Molly Walker) of Ocean, NJ. Shirley is also survived by grandchildren Audrey Ruoff of Crofton, MD (Alexander Ruoff), Dr. Vera Goldberg of Silver Spring, MD, Abigail Goldberg (John Morrison) of Piscataway, NJ, Lucy Goldberg of Manhattan, NY, Samuel Goldberg (Erica), of Chicago, IL, and great-grandchildren Jimmy and Phillip Ruoff and Charlotte Goldberg. She was the beloved aunt of Janet Kronstadt (d.2020), Barbara Fourt of La Honda, CA and John Kronstadt of Los Angeles, CA.
Burial will take place at 1:00 PM on Friday April 5 at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, 11501 Garrison Forest Road Owings Mills, MD.
