Sidney and I were good friends in high school.  We visited each other's homes, played chess (I always lost), talked about science and philosophy.  We were compatible 'nerds' I believe. We lost touch, this was way before the internet age.  In college he visited me unannounced on a few occasions.  I became aware of his fall into the throws of illness. From what little information I received over the years he never escaped though he did manage to live outside of institutions.  He was by far the brightest person I ever met at the time. He was, of course, marginalized by most because of this. He was unique and suffered for it.  My heart goes out to his family whom I am sure had more pain than most. Although we had not actually seen each other in many years I feel the loss as his leaving. We will all follow him soon enough. I hope he did not suffer at the end.
