Vera Gitten

June 18, 1938June 12, 2020

Vera Gitten, 81, passed away peacefully at home June 12, 2020, after a short period of declining health. She was predeceased by her husband of over 40 years, Larry. Vera was born in Queens, New York to Beatrice and Marion Belicove. She attended Far Rockaway High School and graduated from Hunter College with a degree in education. A resident of Monmouth County for over 60 years she was a teacher in the Ocean Township school system. She volunteered at Monmouth Medical Center, Temple Beth Torah and Congregation Torat-El. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and candor as well as the joy she received from a good conversation and a well matched outfit. She became a consummate baker and will be remembered for her French Toast dessert. She was also an avid Mah Jong and bridge player, but enjoyed getting together with family and friends above all. Vera is survived by her sons Howard of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Michael of Wayland, Massachusetts, daughters-in-law Margie and Cindy and four grandchildren, Rob, Emily, Victoria and Isabel. In light of the pandemic, the family does not want to put our friends and family at risk for a gathering. If you would like to share a memory with the family please visit Bloomfield Cooper Funeral Home, Ocean, NJ on line. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association.

I t was a pleasure working along side Vera at OTES. She was always so upbeat and encouraging. We shared many conversations about our growing up in NY and moving to NJ to raise our families. We had a lot in common and I was always inspired by Vera’s outlook and ideas of family life and teaching. She was a lovely lady, always someone to be admired. May she Rest In Peace.

I am so sad that Vera is no longer with us. She was, and will always be sooo special to us. She was my Father's long-time companion, and I'll always be so grateful that she was part of our lives. She was one of the nicest, funniest and classiest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, and I will miss her sooo much. : (

What fun it was to work with Vera! She greeted her students and colleagues with a genuine smile and sincere interest. Although her teaching day at OTES ended at 11:45, she remained at school to join us for lunch with funny and amusing stories. She was also great at organizing and hosting out of school get- togethers. I will remember her fondly!

I remember the good old days of the bridge games we played when Vera would hold her cards a certain way. And our trip to Bermuda with the bridge players couples. So many good times. Rest in peace,, Vera. My heart goes out to her lovely family. Marcia Jacobs
