

Nora Beatrice Shrewsbury Lay, 87, of Glen Fork, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016 at her home, surrounded by her family. Born March 14, 1928 in Glen Fork, WV, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Offie Dell Shrewsbury. After earning her degree at Marshall University, Beatrice began her career as a teacher in Lorraine, OH. She spent the remainder of her career at Glen Fork Grade School, from which she retired. Beatrice was active in her community, she always looked forward to working the polls every election. She was proud to be named to the Glen Rogers High School Hall of Fame. She was a founding member of Glen Fork Baptist Temple, where she enjoyed being a part of Vacation Bible School and the choir. She loved attending church! Beatrice was an excellent cook and spent endless hours in her kitchen cooking, baking and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Elmer Lay in 2009 and a step-daughter, Carol Lutgens. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Those left to cherish Beatrice’s memory are her sons, Samuel Lay and wife, Lisa of Cary, NC, John Lay and wife, Belinda of Oceana and Damon Lay and wife, Holly of Thousand Oaks, CA; grandchildren, Michael Lay, Sara Lay, Kristina Lay, Nicole Lay, Natasha Lay Cline, John David Lay II, Jenna Lay, Kelli Lay, Hannah Lay, Michele Higgins and Kevin Gregorius; great-grandchildren, Cruz Cline, Gavin Higgins and Seth Higgins; and special friends, Darlene Vanover and Rishona Jones. A special thanks to her caregivers, Sherry Hood, Lenette Wood, Stephanie Blankenship, Lora Mitchell, Cathy Daniels, Harriett Doss and Amber Cook. The family would also like to say a special thank you to Dr. Kelly Pitsenbarger and the staff of Gentiva Home Health for their special care. Those serving as pallbearers will be: Michael Lay, John David Lay II, Phil Shrewsbury, Firley Shumate, EZ Cozort and Roger Day.
