Ray Fred Shumate

Ray Fred Shumate, 89, departed this life on September 29, 2015 following a long illness. Born June 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Harper & Grace Shumate. He was a retired coal miner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pansy Arlene Shumate; a daughter, Shirley Chancey; three sisters, Violet Justice, Ruby Farmer and Clara Whitt; and two brothers, Basil Shumate and Teddy Shumate. Those left to cherish his memory are four daughters, Phyllis Osborne and husband, Chester of Kopperston, Darlene Bailey and husband, Don of Pineville, Kathy Livingston of Hope Mills, NC and Tina Helmandollar and husband, Dale of Oceana; three sons, David Shumate and wife, Beulah of Oceana, Jerry Shumate and wife, Edith of Austinville, VA and Billy Shumate and wife, Kim of Oceana; two sisters, Judy Johnson of Pineville and Barbara Shumate of Pineville; a brother, Harper Shumate, Jr.; a son-in-law, Bill Chancey; twenty one grandchildren; and twenty four great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The Shumate family would like to thank the staff of Wyoming Continuous Care and Bowers Hospice House for the excellent care that was given to Ray.
