Betty Ruth Denton Johnson was born in an old farmhouse near Floydada, TX on July 18, 1925. She was the second child of Loyd A. Denton and Sara Bunch Denton, both of whom have preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her six siblings: Mary Young, Perry Denton, John Denton, Nell Bennett, Joe Denton and Elizabeth (Beth) Lewis. She was the last one standing in her family who was truly part of the greatest generation.
Betty was born not long after our country celebrated its 149th year of freedom and she gained her angel wings within a day (January 2) of this country welcoming the new year of 2022. In 1925 that would have seemed like science fiction.
Betty’s greatest joy was her family. She married William R. Johnson August 12, 1945, not long after he returned from years of serving overseas during WWII. She first met him while toiling in the cotton fields in the Texas panhandle during the Great Depression. It was love at first sight for both. Sadly, Ray preceded her in death in late 2009. She was also preceded in death by her oldest child and only son, William (Bill) Johnson Jr.
Betty is survived by her daughter: Molly Aldridge, of Allen TX; grandsons: Tim Brizendine and girlfriend, Tara Wilson (whom Mom fondly called Kyra because she couldn’t remember Tara) of Odessa, Bryan Brizendine of Allen, Chad Johnson and wife, Tavia, Jaime Johnson; Bill’s widow, Denise Sheffield Johnson; eight great grandchildren, including Haylea Brizendine, who helped care for her the last year of her life; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was a long time employee of the US Post Office in Odessa, retiring in 1986 due to complications from back surgery. She loved her job and her coworkers and missed them for many years.
A private service was held and Betty is now resting next to Ray at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please leave a message with your fondest memories of Betty on the Hubbard-Kelly website. She will be missed and sweet memories of her long and loving life will bring smiles to us all as we move forward together as a family.
