Doris G. Broome, 85, of Goldsmith, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born March 23, 1934 in Sumrall, Mississippi to the late Carl Newton and Mary Elizabeth (Tims) Davis.
She was the sixth of ten children. Doris married Lee Elby Broome on October 1, 1950 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Shortly after, they moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas for eight years. The place they called home, however, was El Paso, Texas where they raised their three children on Swallow Lane alongside their aunts, uncles, and cousins. Once they became empty-nesters, they moved to Odessa, Texas, which became their permanent home.
She enjoyed reading, playing cards (specifically Liver Pool Rummy), telling jokes, cooking, and shopping (was quite the bargain hunter). She loved her family and spending time with them.
Doris had a deep love for children. She ran a daycare in her home for 40+ years enjoying sitting on the porch swing, singing songs like “Jesus Loves Me.” She also worked in the nursery at Crescent Park every Sunday.
Her love for Jesus was a testimony of His goodness and she made it her mission to share His unconditional love to all she came in contact with.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lee Elby Broome; sons, Michael Lee Broome and Richard Elby Broome; brothers, Elery Davis, Hubert Davis, Dillon Davis and Billy Davis; sisters, Vera Kelly, Troy Fennell, Dot Hall, Sylvia Akins, and Gloria James.
She is survived by her daughter, Gina Caraway and husband Joe; Daughter-in-law, Brenda Broome, Godchildren, Lori Correll, Terese Lahann and husband Jeff, and Scott Correll; Eight grandchildren, Shane Williams and wife Karen, Shilo Duckworth and husband Matt, Jason Broome and wife Dominique, Jonathan Broome, David Broome and wife Belinda, Janet Broome, Brandon Ware, Kelli Umansky and Kevin Broome; three grand-godchildren, Travis Lahann and wife Jenna, Austin Lahann, and Karsyn Lahann; and 15 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 1 PM at First Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 2 PM with Pastor Byron McWilliams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Jeff Lahann, Austin Lahann, Shane Williams, Matt Duckworth, Joe Caraway, and Kevin Broome will serve as pallbearers.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and First Baptist Odessa Children’s Ministry in Doris’ name.
