Doris Couch Cooper of Odessa was born October 16, 1925, in Ennis, Texas to Vesta Virginia and Harry Couch. Doris was a red-haired beauty with a vivacious personality and captivated everyone who knew her. She was deeply loved by her family and friends. After a brief illness, she passed away on February 19, 2018, at the age of 92.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Odessa, under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Friday, March 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Doris grew up in Gainesville, Texas and attended Gainesville High School where she played clarinet in the band, was a cheerleader and was voted Most Beautiful.
After graduating from high school, Doris attended Southern Methodist University for a semester and then returned to Gainesville. One evening at the local drug store, Doris met a young red-haired soldier named John Cooper III and the two began dating. They soon fell in love. After John completed his military service during World War II and graduated from Texas A&M, the couple was married on August 30, 1947, in Gainesville.
Doris and John first lived in Dallas and then Tennessee before moving to Odessa in 1951 where John eventually started Cooper Construction Co., Inc. in 1954.
Doris was active in St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Odessa Country Club, Symphony Guild, Junior League of Odessa, Crystal Ball Board and Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed entertaining in her home designed for that purpose and hosted many gatherings there. Among the special guests was well-known Benny Goodman. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends, especially those in her many bridge clubs. Needlepointing and working in the yard were among her favorite hobbies. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico, Europe and Russia, and to their lake house at Horseshoe Bay.
Survivors include a son, John W. Cooper IV (Lana) of Midland; a daughter, Deborah Cooper Farrell (Pat) of Katy; four grandchildren, Andrew Roberts (Kerri) of Belton, Jack Roberts of San Antonio, Rosemary Roberts (Mitchel Wilson II) of Los Angeles, California, and Christopher W. Cooper of Midland; and four great-grandchildren, Caroline, Asa and Clara Roberts of Belton, and Xyola Wilson of Los Angeles.
The family gives special thanks to the caregivers: Janette De Alba, Noelia Escontrias, Juana Huarneros, Irma Manriquez and Nora Elias Romero.
