Emma Elizabeth Nunn received God’s ultimate healing when He called her home on April 14, 2011. Born on June 24, 1923, in Arkansas, to Joseph William Pierce and Laura Hattie Mae Keller, Emma was the sixth of eight children. Her father was a blacksmith and a jack of all trades. As work ran out in Arkansas, he loaded his family on a covered wagon and they moved to Gould, OK, where she would grow up, meet and eventually marry her husband, Carroll Buford Nunn.
From an early age she learned the value of hard work. As soon as a child was old enough to work, they were expected to do what they could to help the family “make ends meet.” Whether she was babysitting or working in the fields during harvest, she always did her part. A trait that was evident throughout her life. She once recounted a time when they worked in the fields until it was too late to come home so they took their blankets and slept under the trees or “chased the chickens out of the chicken coop and slept there,” and as she said, “the chickens let us know they were not happy!”
Carroll worked at a local Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) Camp and they met at a church revival and began attending church services and socials together regularly.
They married on October 13, 1940, at her family home when she was 17 years old. The first of three children, Carolyn, was born in 1942. Carroll eventually joined the Army where he served as a medic during WWII.
In 1946, the young family joined other family members in a move to Odessa where Carroll was employed by the Sid Richardson Carbon Black plant for 25 years.
Shortly after the move, their son, Dennis, was born in 1947, followed by Evelyn, in 1956. Emma was a stay-at-home mom and devoted herself faithfully to her family. Each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild was considered her favorite and they all were. Family was a vital part of her life and held a consistent place in her daily prayer life.
Carroll was a bi-vocational music minister serving churches in the Odessa area with Emma serving faithfully beside him in whatever capacity the church needed her. They were charter members of Odessa’s Second Baptist Church. While there, Emma served in various missions organizations and assisted the church’s ministry in a number of different ways.
Through the ups and downs of life, she always fought to maintain a steadfast faith in and love her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When health issues prevented her from attending worship services regularly she would watch as many as four different services on TV during any given Sunday morning.
Awaiting her in Heaven are her parents, her siblings, her husband, Carroll, her son, Dennis, and a great-grandson, Connor Box.
Her memory and legacy live on in her daughter, Carolyn Feldman and husband, Harold, along with their children, Todd and Michael and grandsons, Dalton and Austin, all of West Salem, IL; her daughter, Evelyn Box and husband, Jeff of Odessa, and their children, Rachel Phelps and husband, Jonathan of Murphy, TX, and son, Josh Box of Midland, TX.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Box officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests either donations to your favorite ministry or the children’s ministry at Chapel Hill Baptist Church.
Arrangements entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home of Odessa.
