She was born October 15, 1918, to Emmit and Vera Nelson and lived in Odessa, Texas during her childhood and part of her adulthood. She married Harold Edwards, September 1935 in Odessa, Texas and enjoyed 51 years of marriage before Harold passed away September 29, 1987. Gwen ran 2 restaurants successfully and was involved in the family oil company, TX Oil Well Service. She was a member of the Sunset Ridge Church of Christ in Brady and was a life member of the Ector County Sheriff Posse. Gwen and Harold left Odessa when they decided that ranching was calling their name, this was where Gwen lived the remaining years enjoying her family.
Gwen never met a stranger and family meant the world to her. She made you feel welcomed from the moment you met her or during a weekend spent at the ranch. She loved the ranching life a long side Harold and her sons, Jim and Butch. She was never without a smile on her face and as long as she was with her family, most importantly her grandkids, she was at her happiest. She enjoyed family time, family reunions, or the famous sister weekends playing Farkle or any card game till all hours of the night. Gwen was usually the last to go to bed. But she wasn’t above going fishing, barrel racing or riding horses. Gwen lead a life of faith, family and fun.
She is survived by her son, Butch and wife, Dora Edwards of Brady, brother, Sonny and wife, Marlene Nelson of Huntsville. Four grandsons, Brett Edwards of Germany, Kelly Edwards of Idabel, OK, Chance and Victoria Edwards of Montgomery and Kurt Edwards of Missouri. Two great grandsons, Brandon and Josh Edwards; two great grand-daughters, Sabra Thompson of Missouri and Brooklyn Edwards of Montgomery. Two great, great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Gwen is preceded in death by her husband Harold, son James “Jim” Edwards, daughter Barbara Ann Edwards. Her parents, one brother Jack Nelson, and four sisters Babe Williamson, Thelma Montgomery, Pat Barton and Grace Gober.
Celebration of Gwen’s life will be held Thursday, April 19 at 1pm at Wilson Chapel with graveside service to follow at Ector County Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to American Breast Cancer Association or the charity of your choice.
