Harold Groomer, 70, of Odessa went to spend his first Christmas with Jesus on December 24, 2012. He was born March 26, 1942 in Gene Autry, Oklahoma to Clara & Loyd Groomer. He shared his birthday with his mother.
Harold was raised near Eunice, NM at the Phillips 66 camp in Oil Center. He graduated from Eunice High School in 1960 where he was named most handsome his senior year. In 1961, he moved to Odessa where he attended college and met his future wife Wadonna and her daughter Shatana. They were married October 17, 1966 at the home of Rev. Bob White.
In 1964, he began his 20 year career with Meter Service and Supply as a meter service tech and worked his way to store manager. He was commonly known just as “Groomer” or “Workhorse Groomer”. Later he worked for ITT Snyder/Barton Instruments before his illness and retirement in 2000. He enjoyed his work and fellow coworkers most of whom he hired. One of the many topics of conversation around the counter was the company slow-pitch softball team, where he was the pitcher. Ah yes, what fond memories he had of those years spent playing ball with his colleagues.
He had many hobbies and interest. He and Wadonna made many windchimes over the years and loved going to flea markets and craft shows to sell them and enjoy the camaraderie between the vendors. Some of his other hobbies included bowling, antique cars, and westerns. He loved western movies, art and figurines. He was an avid John Wayne fan. He and Wadonna spent many fun weekends going fishing with his fellow coworkers. He loved to travel and every summer took vacations to many different places.
He was a big football fan and would watch game after game. Of course his favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. He spent many weekends traveling to visit family in Eunice, Wink, and Mentone over the years, but would schedule his return trip home around the Cowboy’s game.
He always loved people and enjoyed his friendships. His family meant the world to him and he would do anything for them. He will be dearly missed but we know he is healed and at home with our Father in Heaven.
He is survived by his wife Wadonna Groomer and daughter Shatana, one sister, Sue Ann Kelton & husband Montie of Red Oak, Texas and brother C. V. Groomer & wife Faye of The Woodlands, Texas and many nieces, nephews & very dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ramona and brother Ellis Glen.
There will be a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2012 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will be 4:00 p.m. at the Kermit City Cemetery in Kermit, TX.
