February 2, 1936May 4, 2013

HOWARD LEE MILLSAP Howard Lee Millsap was born February 2, 1936 in Sudan, Texas and he died May 4, 2013 in Odessa, Texas, following a lengthy illness. He graduated from Sudan High School whereupon he joined the U.S Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. After completing his basic training at Camp Pendleton, California, he served 14 months in Korea before returning to Camp Pendleton. During his youth, Howard boxed in the Golden Gloves and advanced to the quarter finals in Fort Worth, Texas. He subsequently turned to professional boxing for a short time and boxed under the name, “Golden Boy”. His love of athletics then led him into distance running where he completed several marathons including two at White Rock in Dallas, Texas. Having so qualified, it was his dream and plan to run in the Boston Marathon, a dream never fulfilled due to injuries and other circumstances. Howard loved music, and as a one time member of the West Texas Jazz Society, he never missed a jazz concert. In addition, he was a devoted fan of Bob Wills and his music and each year, he made his customary trek to Turkey, Texas for the Bob Wills Festival. After his retirement as a sales representative employed by Ponca Wholesale, and Lorillard Corporation, Howard devoted his energy toward volunteering for causes to help improve the lives of those who were less fortunate. His favorite projects included First United Methodist Church Food Panty and Meals on Wheels where he committed a minimum of one day per week and was always ready to provide additional time whenever needed. He made many friends with those he served and never passed up an opportunity to spend a little extra time visiting with them. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Vera Lee and Marlin Millsap. He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, the former Carole Lynn; his son, Michael Millsap & wife, Kathy of Pflugerville, TX; daughter, Laura Houser & fiancé, Richard Lawler and daughter, Landri of Odessa, TX: grandson, Kragen Millsap of Pflugerville, TX; granddaughters, Leigha Millsap of San Marcos, TX and Amanda Houser of Odessa, TX; brother, Ronnie Millsap & his wife, Martha of Big Spring, TX; and sister, Jeannie Lefler & her husband, Jerry of Lewisville, TX. The family would like to thank the staff of Home Instead and Star Hospice for their superb care and support, and all who offered prayers, care, and comfort during his illness. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Tamplen officiating. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or any of Howard’s favorite projects. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Carol, Michael, and Laura, I was heartbroken to hear of your loss. My memory of Howard is seeing him running at any and all hours of the day as I would pass your house on my way home. What a lovely person. My heart and sympathies go out to you all.
