H. Norman “Norm” Havis, age 92, of Odessa passed away from this life into the Loving Hands of God, on April 26, 2014 at Buena Vida Nursing facility within ten hours of being transferred there from Medical Center Hospital.
Norm, as he was known, was born June 29, 1921 in Pecos, Texas, being the youngest of five children of the late Van D. and Florence Eva (Mansfield) Havis.
Norm was married to the love of his life, Estelle Irene Oglesbee on October 10, 1943 in Forest Glen, Maryland for 70 happy years.
He was a member of the Church of Christ on Billy Hext Road. Norm was baptized by immersion at the age of 12, living his long life as a happy, consistent Christian and as a great supporter of Christian Missions.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II; a Master Mason for 62 years; a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Freemason for 61 years; and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 59 years.
Norm worked at the Atomic Facilities in Scoville, ID and Oak Ridge, TN; and at the Missile Facilities at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc and the Missile Engine Testing as San Susanna, CA. Lastly, he owned and operated a farm in Gaines County, TX, before retiring at the age of 80.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Van D. and Florence Eva Havis; three brothers, Rex Van Havis, James Bryant Havis and Paul Minor Havis; and one sister, Florence Eva (Havis) McGowan.
He is survived by his wife Estelle Irene Havis, daughter, Sharon E. Havis both of Odessa; two nephews; Rex Van Havis, Jr. of Crowley and David Bruce McGowan of Seattle, WA, and three nieces, Mrs. Betty Jean (Havis) Ford of Ft. Worth, Mrs.Patricia Joyce (Havis) Hollowell and husband, Vance of Carrolton, MO, and Mrs. Pam Ann (McGowan) Krizan of Raton, NM.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Joel Adams for his many years of Lung care; Dr. Daniel O’Hearn for his years of care; the nurses and aides of the 8th floor of Medical Center Hospital for their care; the nurses and coordinator of Buena Vida Nursing facility and Home Hospice for their care.
Visitation will be from 6 pm- 8pm on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
A Graveside Service and burial will be held at 10 am Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Fairview Cemetery in Pecos, TX, with Nathan Smelser officiating.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
