Dr. J.R. (Randy) Haywood passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012, surrounded by family. Randy was born in Navarro County, Texas, on August 13, 1921, to Myrtle Beauchamp Haywood and Charles Albert Haywood. He graduated from Streetman High School and then served in the United States Army Air Corps as a Master Sergeant until his discharge after World War II. After attending the University of Texas at Austin for pre-dental courses, he graduated from Baylor University School of Dentistry in December 1950. He married Betty Ruth Connell in August 1950 in Sweetwater, Texas. The couple moved to Odessa, where Randy opened his dental practice in October 1952. He practiced dentistry for 57 years, until his retirement in August 2009.
He is survived by Betty Haywood, his wife of 62 years. He is also survived by four children: Jan McDaniel and husband, Wes, of Colleyville; Dr. David Haywood and wife, Lea, of Rowlett; Jim Haywood, of Odessa; and Joy Young and husband, Dr. Dean Young, of Waco. His four grandchildren are Bonnie McDaniel and Tyler McDaniel, of Colleyville; Dr. Phil Young, of Austin; and Alissa Young Wiseman and husband, Scott, of Waco. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Randy served in every office in District 21C of the Texas Dental Society. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon as well as a member of many committees there. He also taught Sunday school and served the Lord in the Prayer Room and the homebound ministry. In addition, he made three mission trips to Mexico, where he helped improve people’s health as a dentist.
He was a patron of the Globe of the Great Southwest and supported the Midland Odessa Symphony and Chorale, the Permian Playhouse, and other civic organizations.
He was a blessing to all who knew him, a generous and loving man, and an example of the Christ-filled life.
Family and friends will gather at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Services are set for Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bailey Stone, Dr. Byron McWilliams, and Rev. Curtis Brewer officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or the Gideons International.
