Jerry Lynn Myers was born October 4, 1950 in Brady Texas to Nelson and Ruth Myers and the world is a better place for that. He left us Sunday, May 22nd.
Jerry – father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend. Daddy took each of his roles very seriously. As the father of four children who are blessed to have been his and who are heartbroken to have lost their Daddy, Jerry was – is—the best father a child could ask for. We were lulled to sleep at night as young children by the sound of daddy’s reading favorites like “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Lord of the Flies,” or “Freddy the Pig.” Other nights, daddy would sing us to sleep with our small selection of songs: “Billy and Sue,” “El Paso”, “All that Glitters”, “Long Black Veil,” “Little Joe the Wrangler,” and “Comanche.”
As a grandfather, Jerry became Pop-Pop – the all-knowing smartest man on earth. Questions about math? Ask Pop-Pop. Questions about the universe? Settle in for a question and answer session that only a Pop-Pop would make time for.
As much as Jerry loved his kids and grandkids, he created a special place in his heart for his much younger child, Sam. Sam challenged Dad in so many wonderful ways. For most of us, Daddy was the teacher; but Daddy actually learned much from his baby boy.
The woman who gave Daddy Sam, Susan, also opened his life to new possibilities of happiness. Dad learned to return to his crazy, corny jokes and starting laughing again. He opened up to love.
As Mr. Myers, Dad loved the challenge of teaching. He bonded with each child he taught and invested more time, energy and love into every lesson he gave. He would have – and sometimes did- give more than he could afford emotionally. But, he excelled as a teacher in great part because he was a man who always invested all of himself.
As a brother and uncle, Dad loved his family and would do anything to sustain their happiness. Luckily for Dad, his siblings loved him and each other without limits. One would be hard put to finds siblings as close and with such a depth of understanding of family.
Daddy was a fighter. He was a writer, a teacher, an uncle and a brother. Mostly he was the most wonderful Daddy and fantastic husband. Daddy will missed and he will be loved always and forever. Dad and his lessons will never be forgotten.
Daddy was preceded in death by his beloved sister Phyllis, his mother Ruth, and his father Nelson.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife Susan; his children Chris (Renee) of Rosharon, Jeri Leigh (Chase) of Lubbock, Josie (Matthew) of Brazoria, and Sam. He was Pop-Pop to 7 ½ grandchildren – Britany, MacKenzie, Miranda, Jacob, Cheyenne, Michaela, Lila and Baby West. He is survived by brothers Larry (Diane), Randy (Beverly) and sister Brenda (Deryl) Briles, all of Odessa and many loved nieces and nephews who he adored beyond words. He leaves his legacy of teaching to his former coworkers at Travis Elementary and his many former students.
Family visitation will be Wednesday, May 25th from 6 pm to 8 pm at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Service honoring Jerry Myers will be held Thursday, May 26th at 3 pm at the Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with Rev. Johnny Touchstone officiating.
In Daddy’s words:
I love you.
Happy Trails.
