She, the sixth surviving child, was born to Maude and James A. Culpepper on September 16, 1918 in Vernon,Texas. Her father drowned in a lake accident a month before her birth.
Jimmie graduated from Altus, Oklahoma High School and moved in with a sister in Portales, New Mexico. There she met a Texas Technological College student J.D. McCracken. They married September 1, 1939. When WWII broke out, he joined the military and she followed him around the U.S. In 1944, they had son Lonnie Dean McCracken in Mississippi. After the war ended, they settled in Odessa, Texas. Daughter Rikki Ann McCracken Upton was born in 1952. Eight years later, Jimmie went to work for the American Red Cross. Several years later she became a clerk for the Texas Welfare Department. She retired in 1990 after 21 years of service. She has also owned and operated a print shop, and been a dance instructor, teaching ballroom, country, and line dancing. She had the dance troupe The High Stepping Grannies for years, giving performances at regional, state, and local fairs and events.
Jimmie is preceded in death by her parents Maude and James Culpepper, husband J.D.
McCracken, ten siblings, beloved in- laws Jessie and Lon L. McCracken, sister-in-law Etta Ann Smith, and many other relatives.
Jimmie is survived by son Lonnie Dean McCracken and wife Lyn of New Braunfels, Texas; daughter Rikki Ann Upton and husband Randall of Midland, Texas; grandson Jeff McCracken and wife Monica of Buda, Texas; grandson Christopher Upton and wife Brandi of Keller, Texas; grandson Benjamin Upton and wife Jackie of Odessa, Texas; great grandchildren Connor McCracken, Kensie McCracken, Meredith Upton, Caitlyn Upton, Mallory Upton, and Jeremy Weathermon. She also leaves siblings Ruth and Christine, and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside interment will be held August 3, 2015, 9:30am, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 6801 E I20BUS, Odessa, Texas. Memorial services will be August 14, 2015, 2:00 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 800 West Texas, Midland, Texas, Chaplain, Chris Hagger officiating.
The family wishes to thank Jimmie's special nurse Dawn Lopez, RN, Chaplain Chris Hagger, and the other caring staff of Compass Hospice, and the many wonderful staff at Legacy Ranch Alzheimer's Care Facility who cared for Jimmie the past four years.
