Joan King Burkett left her earthly body to join her loved ones in eternity September 4, 2018 at The Courtyards in Odessa, Texas. Joan was born April 18, 1933 to Joseph Sylvester King and Ollie Pearce King in Sterling City, Texas.
Joan attended school in Sterling City, Texas where she was a cheerleader. After high school, Joan moved to San Angelo, Texas where she worked at the courthouse for Judge Keyes until she retired. Joan moved to Odessa six years ago to be closer to family and was residing at The Courtyards Assisted Living in Odessa at the time of her passing.
Although Joan was a very private individual, everyone she met just fell in love with her and wound up confiding their deepest confidences in her and never once felt judged by her. Her ability to make people feel relaxed and at ease in her presence was just a God given talent. To know her was to love her. Her talents for decorating and envisioning something and turning it into the most amazing things were unsurpassed. She had a flare for fashion, and was always up to date with the latest styles. She could take something from a garage sale and make it look like it came from Neiman Marcus. She loved to read, was very well versed in any subject, and could carry on a conversation with anyone. She will be missed by all who knew what a special individual she was, and her ability to make them feel special.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Sylvester King & Ollie Pearce King; Brothers, Loyd King of Coleman, Texas and JS King and wife Faye of Brady, Texas; A sister, Rose McCleery of Odessa, Texas. She is survived by her sister-in-law Raye King of Coleman, Texas and her brother-in-law, Forrest McCleery of Odessa, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, and her dear friends Ron and Gigi Landy of San Angelo, Texas who always treated her like family.
Joan had made preparations to have her body donated to science, in order to help someone else. Even in death, she managed to think of someone else. There will be a memorial in her honor at a later date.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Melissa of Hospice and Taylor of Courtyards and all the staff at Courtyards who took the time to help make Aunt Jody’s transition into eternity easier. Thank you to Jamie, Helen, Jan and Lettie who sat with her the last week were truly comforted by your compassion for this special lady.
