John Wesley Ward, lovingly known to most as “JW,” passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 17, 1941, John lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and steadfast faith.
JW was a devoted husband and a proud father to his three children: Derek, Curtis, and Lisa Ward. He spent many years working in the oil fields as a driller, where he earned a reputation as one of the hardest workers in the field. His dedication and determination were unmatched. Even after the industry retired him due to a broken back, JW’s strength of spirit never wavered. He remained in Odessa, faithfully watching over and caring for his family.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Ward; his mother, Nellie Ward; his father, Delbert Ward; his brothers, Delbert Ward and Wayne Ward; his sisters, Nita Hodnett, Wanda Jean Ryan, and Louella Mae Ward “Totsee.”
After the passing of much of his immediate family, JW moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he spent the last thirteen years of his life living with his son Curtis. During that time, father and son shared countless hours working side by side, building projects and making memories that will be cherished forever.
JW loved music, dancing, and living life with a carefree spirit—because that is truly who he was. His joy came from knowing Jesus, and he worshipped every day as if it were his last. His faith was the foundation of his life and a legacy he leaves behind for his family.
He is survived by his son, Curtis Ward and wife Salena of Amarillo, Texas; son Derek Ward of South Carolina; granddaughter Lyndsee Vincent and husband Seth of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; granddaughter Alexus Jameson and husband Jarrett of Amarillo, Texas; granddaughter Heather and her family; grandson Steven Ward and his family; and two great-grandsons, Jaxon Wade and River Ray, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Dad, we will miss you.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas.
