Laura Ann Moore Turner passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Laura was born August 4, 1945 in Stillwater, Oklahoma to Thomas H. Moore and Mary Waleta Moore.

She graduated from Hobbs, NM, High School in 1963, attended the University of Washington for two years and graduated from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in 1985, with a degree in Literature. Laura was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority while in college and belonged to numerous professional educational organizations during her teaching years.

She is survived by her husband Conrad of the home and by daughter Valaria of Plano, Texas. She is also survived by her sister Waleta Spear and husband Phil of University Park, Texas, and her 2 nieces, Josephine, attending Tulane University, and Alexandra, attending University of Arizona.

Laura was preceded in death by her mother and dad and by a brother, Johnny Moore. After securing her degree from UTPB, Laura began a teaching career that proved totally fulfilling to her and equally beneficial to the youngsters she taught. Assignments at Goldsmith and Cavazos in Ector County ISD and Bunker Hill Elementary in the Spring Branch ISD brought wide-spread recognition and appreciation for her commitment of time and effort and educational excellence from her teaching peers, school administrations and especially the parents of her students. Among other honors, Laura was selected Elementary Teacher of the Year for Spring Branch ISD. Laura Turner was a Christian woman and a member of First Baptist Church in Odessa who found great pleasure in attending and participating in her church Sunday School activities, the worship time and especially the Wednesday night service led by Dr. Byron McWilliams.

Laura was a 51 year survivor of insulin-dependent diabetes and numerous other medical challenges she met without complaining about her plight in life. Thanks to the sure, steady hand of GOD and the attention of Dr. J. B. Naidu and his staff, Laura prospered in her life, as difficult as it was at times, with grace and dignity beyond belief. Now, she has left us to claim the promises Christ made to those who loved HIM.

A memorial service for Laura will be held in First Baptist Church in Odessa at 10:00 on Monday, August 1st, with Glen Pipes, Dr. Byron McWilliams and Curtis Brewer officiating. The family has selected cremation as a final resting solution. Services are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Just found the class picture of my son Andy Mason in Laura's first grade class at Bunker Hill Elementary in Houston TX, 1987. So I looked her up and found her obituary. My thoughts are with you, her family, for your loss. I loved Laura. She was the best teacher Andy ever had. She had such control over a class full of 6 year olds. But she was funny and they loved her. Once I sent a nickel instead of a quarter for Andy to get an ice cream. I am pretty sure she gave him a quarter so he could have one at lunch. She sent a note home with a drawing of the difference in size of a quarter and a nickel. I laughed so hard. She was so funny and was really sweet to the kids. She sent home Andy's report card with a note that said: he sings, he talks, he chatters! At least we know he's happy!! You can see what an impression she made on me. I can't name any of Andy's other teachers but I never forgot 'Mrs. Turner". Neither did Andy. She was a one of a kind. It was a honor to have known her.

Laura maintained close friendships that lasted for decades, including one with me. She was the first friend I made when I moved to Hobbs in 1961. I loved her sense of fun, her bone-deep kindness, her glowing smile. The adventures we shared are now precious memories.

To Conrad and Valeria, there are no words. All of us were blessed by Laura's life.

Laura was a sweet friend to me when we were high school students. I have often wondered where she was, as I moved away right after graduation. It is a comfort to know of her Christian faith and I know we will meet again. My prayers for comfort to the family.

I was so sad to hear of Laura Ann's passing. We were in band together for many years and she was such a leader in the band and in school. We lost contact after HHS but through the years hooked up through class reunions. She had aged gracefully and despite her illness was happy and ready to lend a hand. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.
