

“Mama” Raquel Flores Contreras went to be with the Lord on April 9, 2012, at the Hospice House in Odessa, Texas. In life, she was surrounded by the love of her family that sustained her as she walked into her Savior’s arms. She dedicated her life to serve her Lord first, and her family, second. In spite of her humble beginnings, she was a pillar of strength and instilled the values of honesty, integrity and hard work. She nurtured the success of all her children and taught, by example, many others. She will be forever remembered by all those whose lives she touched.
She was born in Crosbyton, Texas, to Maria and Librado Flores. She married the love of her life on November 13, 1937. Her husband, Joaquin Contreras, Sr. and one daughter preceded her in death, as well as 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She was the last remaining living member of her generation. The Lord blessed her with 27 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren and 5 great- great- grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Ramon Contreras and his wife Bertha of El Paso, Texas and Joaquin Contreras of Odessa, Texas. She is also survived by 5 daughters, Lydia Gallegos of Odessa, Texas: Elisama Contreras of Odessa, Texas; Manuela Contreras of Odessa, Texas; Dr. Raquel Contreras of Clemson, South Carolina and Zabdy Smith and her husband Joel of Lubbock, Texas.
Open visitation will be all day beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11th, followed by a 7:00 p.m. celebration-of-life service, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at Primera Asamblea Apostolica de la Fe en Cristo Jesus, 5533 W. Mapp, Odessa, Texas on Thursday, April 12th at 10:00 a.m. with burial following at Sunset Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Jose Ruiz, Jr.
