ODESSA On Saturday October 6th, 2012 Mildred Ellen Lewis was called home by her savior Jesus Christ after fighting courageously against a series of illnesses for the past several years. She was born October 29, 1935 in Lueders, TX to Curtis Lee Hock and Willie May Stanfield Hock. Mildred spent most of her youth in Monahans, Texas where she graduated from Monahans High School and met her eventual husband of 57 years at a high school football game. Bob and Mildred Lewis were married in Monahans in April 1955 and then moved to Colorado, New Mexico, and Dallas before settling in Odessa in 1958 to work and raise a family. In 1959 they purchased a new home in west Odessa where they lived ever since.
Mildred was a deeply religious and moral person that carried herself with quiet, understated dignity. Close friends would tell you there was not a mean bone in her body. She was never one to complain, even when battling a variety of serious health issues during her final years. She was an active member in Belmont Baptist Church for 40 years and assisted with a variety of church functions.
Mildred loved sports and in particular was very passionate about high school and college football. She and Bob were regular fixtures at Odessa High School home football games, holding season tickets for 43 years. They were also members of the “Wild Bunch”, a group of close friends that loved Friday night football and post-game fellowship.
Mildred attended Odessa College and worked locally for many years for Smith International and the law firm of McMahon, Tidwell, Hansen, Atkins, and Fowler. She retired in 1997.
She was always known as “Nana” to her 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren and was revered among all family members for her outstanding cooking and baking skills. It can be argued that she prepared some of the best Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners ever to grace a table.
Our lives will never be the same…we miss her already.
Mildred is survived by her loving husband Bob D. Lewis of Odessa, her sister Bonnie Byrom of Midland, her daughter Holly Fowler and husband Sammy of Odessa, and her son Barry Lewis and wife Debbie of Round Rock, Texas. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jeremy Fowler of Midland, Kristin Lewis of Austin, Cameron Lewis of Austin, and Jennifer Endsley and husband Chance of Kyle, Texas. She is also survived by three great grandchildren: Baylee, Katie, and Emilee Endsley of Kyle, Texas. Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Willie May Hock.
Visitation for Mildred will be Tuesday, October 9, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home 601 N. Alleghaney, Odessa, TX. Services are scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, 10:00 A.M. at Belmont Baptist Church (1200 West 8th Street) officiated by Pastor John McLemore. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home. Friends may give their condolences online at hubbardkellyfuneralhome.com.
