Norberta Chavez Marquez

May 6, 1928November 11, 2020

Norberta “Nena” Chavez Márquez age 92, passed away peacefully with family beside her on November 11, 2020 at Vitas Healthcare Inpatient Care Unit hospice of San Antonio TX after a severe stroke. Last 10 years she was a resident of Highland Nursing Home in San Antonio TX, and son Alfredo Chavez Márquez overseeing her care.

Norberta “Nena” was born on May 6, 1928 in Kent TX to Estanislado Chavez Sr., and Juanita Lopez Chavez. She married her loving husband September of 1947. They made their home to raised their eight children in Odessa TX. She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. Her life revolved around her family, who taught us the importance of our Christian faith, love for each other and always lending a hand to those in need as well as strong work ethics. She always showed compassion to everyone she knew a simple warm meal, a coat or a pair of shoes, an extra blanket always in hand just in case someone was in need. Her home was filled with the aroma of home cooked meals, listening to music while cooking and our favorites were her homemade biscuits and flour tortillas and of course her famous red sauce enchiladas. We had her spicy salsa with every meal. She planted flowers and enjoyed her vegetable garden. Her laugh was infectious. She passed on her love of music to her family, especially ranchera music, to her children and grandchildren.

She will be laid to rest beside her loving husband of 48 years, Rafael Moreno Márquez who passed away age 68 to lung cancer on November 4th 1995 in Odessa TX.

She is preceded in death by her parents Estanislado Chavez Sr., and Juanita Lopez Chavez, daughter Lydia Márquez Abila, July 22nd 2011, her five siblings; Amada Sanchez Chavez, Catarina Sanchez Salcido, Bartolo (Bart) Lopez Sanchez, Benino (Ben) Lopez Sanchez, Estanislado (Ted) Lopez Chavez Jr.

November 20, 2020

I will never forget the weekend that I walked into the house. I was about 13 or 14 years old and mom was feeding a homeless person. I knew from experience of going to the Ector theater on North Grant st., that these homeless persons lived under the Train Station docks off of 1st Street and Grant st. One time I was in the kitchen getting ready to eat and somebody knocked on the front door and I rushed out to answer the door and it was a homeless man. He was asking for a free meal. I guess apparently the word got passed out, where all the homeless men lived under the Train Station docks. Apparently someone left a note with the address, up under the docks. Someone had left it so they could always come to this address and get a free meal. So I saw it happen more than once. They would just knock my mama’s door. She always had food prepared on the stove. So they would knock and walk in and get fed and thank her and they be on their merry way. Mama had a big heart she even fed stray cats. I “Love you forever,“ were her favorite words to us all. I will for miss you Mama.
I Love you forever.
