Samuel Doporto “Sam” Hernandez, SR, 78, of Odessa, Texas, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 at his home. Sam was born March 27, 1940, in Odessa, Texas to Manuel and Petra Hernandez. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and was a proud Marine. On August 28, 1965 he married Elodia Pina in Odessa, Texas and was married for 52 years. Sam was known as the “concrete man”. Sam worked in the concrete business for over 50 years and loved every minute. His greatest joy was to be able to work side by side with his brother, sons, grandsons, and nephews. Sam was a 4th degree knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Ector’s Lions Club of Odessa, Texas. Sam lived his life by serving others in both the community and in the family. After retiring he enjoyed spending time with his wife watching dancing with the stars, sports, and the price is right. Sam also enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the casinos, and going to get a snow cone with his wife. Sam is survived by his two sons, Samuel Hernandez, JR. of Odessa, TX and Stephen Hernandez and wife Virginia Hernandez of Odessa, TX, 8 grandchildren, Monique Hernandez, Samantha Hernandez, Stephen J. Hernandez, Samuel Hernandez III, Simon Hernandez, Estefon Hernandez, Brianna Palomino, and Sebastian Hernandez, and 11 great grandchildren. Brothers and sisters Jessie “Chuy” Hernandez, Ben Hernandez and wife Delores Hernandez, Margie Sandoval and husband Ernest Sandoval, and Rosa Fabela and husband Johnny Fabela, deceased mother Petra Hernandez brothers Alfredo Hernandez, Manuel Hernandez and sisters Mary Hernandez and Jessie Hernandez. Sam will be greatly missed as he starts his life with the Lord. Sam was not an emotional man, but when he spoke the family knew that it was time to listen. His final words to his family was “Today we are together as family and I ask one thing of you. If something ever happens to me, take care of Grandma”. As many members of the armed forces would say, “Sam go in peace, we have the watch”. Semper Fi.
