Tommy Nelson was born in Pasadena, Texas on September 18, 1958 to Richard and Virginia Nelson. He graduated from Permian High School in 1977 and even though he was never married, many friends considered him family because of his love, gentleness, and eagerness to always be ready to lend a hand day or night. He worked as an oil field casing crew foreman for Permian Power Tongs for 35 years. Tommy loved collecting sports memorabilia. He loved the Colorado Rockies and the Dallas Cowboys. Tommy was known for his love of cooking barbecue on his charcoal grill for friends and family. He loved Christmas and whenever he could, traveled to Colorado to spend time with family, but also spent many holidays in the love and fellowship of his friends.
Tommy died on May 21, after having only recently retired. He was excited about building his mobile barbecue grill and perhaps selling barbecue sandwiches. And even though we know he would have been very successful – it would seem that God has a mission for him in the heavenly realms to celebrate his retirement. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, and numerous close friends. He is survived by his three siblings Barbara, Brenda, and Rich, as well as a very large extended family in Colorado. His death will leave a great vacancy in the lives of many – he will be terribly missed.
A memorial in appreciation and thanks for his multitude of friends will be held for him at Medical Center Hospital Chapel at in Odessa 11:30 AM Saturday morning May 24. Viewing is at Hubbard Kelly funeral home 10 AM through noon on Saturday the 24th. A celebration of Tommy‘s life will be held in the Denver area at a later date TBD. Tommy was 66 years of age.
