Virginia Elberta Proctor aged 86, of Odessa, TX received her angel wings on Sunday September 25, 2022 at her home surrounded by family. She was born to John Farquhar and Gladys (Fulcher) Farquhar on February 18, 1936 in Fort Worth Texas. She began her life of caregiving as the oldest of four, often taking care of her younger siblings while their parents worked. After her family moved to Brownfield, TX she met the love of her life Bill Proctor. The two would be married on the family farm in Gomez, TX, December 25, 1952. They welcomed daughters Sheila, Kay and Donna to the family and mourned the loss of twin boys, Elbert and Delbert. Over the next few years, they worked on the family farm. Needing a new start, the family relocated to Odessa, TX in 1962. With this move, Proctor Stables was born and began a new life for Bill and Virginia with the addition of the stables, arena and trailer park. They then welcomed their fourth daughter, Vickie. Memories were made by many at Proctor Stables over the years. Virginia announced and kept the books of numerous goat and team ropings over the years in the almost famous Proctor’s Arena.
Even though she only finished the 9th grade, Virginia was the sole bookkeeper of Proctor Stables. She was thrifty and always knew which stores had the best deals. Often calling on her family members to shop for her to keep her sugar inventory up. She loved all her children dearly and supported them in every way. She hauled the girls and their horses to rodeos all over the state and made sure each knew she was their biggest fan in the stands. From rodeos to futurities and all the barrel races in between, Virginia could be spotted in the stands with her notepad writing down the times with her huge suitcase size video camera to capture the runs.
Once the grandkids came along her traveling did not stop. Virginia traveled many miles to watch football games, pole vaulting meets, basketball games, and whatever sport the grands and eventually great grands were into at the time. Virginia truly loved supporting her family’s hobbies and loved to brag on their accomplishments to her friends. No matter the time of day or night she would pick up the phone to hear about your day and how the competition went. When she was not traveling, Virginia had a love for cooking and baking. She did not just cook for those at the table, but made sure there was plenty for those “who may show up”. There was always room at her table with a big glass of sweet ice tea. Her famous red velvet cake and pecan pies were a staple during holidays and always made from home grown pecans. In the Spring, her homegrown apricot fried pies were the talk of the family and the lucky member to get the first bite earned bragging rights until the next baking day.
Virginia was a matriarch. The emotional support that provided her family a home. She was a caregiver at heart, having taken care of many people throughout her life. Including her late husband, Bill. They shared 65 wonderful years together until Bill’s passing in May of 2018.
Virginia is preceded in death by her late husband, Bill, her parents, 2 brothers: Ronnie and Kenny, and twin sons. Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her four daughters and their husbands: Sheila (Tommy) Zant of Odessa, Kay (Robert) Blandford of Sutherland Springs, Donna (David) Barnett of Odessa, Vickie (Pat) Liles of Greenwood, four grandchildren: Kasie (Kyle) Logsdon, Austin (Cassie) Freeman, Brett Liles, Kyle Barnett, and four great grandchildren: Cameron Freeman, Kesley Logsdon, Kason Freeman and Kinley Logsdon. Virginia is also survived by her sister Jackie Woods and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday September 30th 2022 at 10 AM at Northside Baptist Church in Odessa, TX with Brother Clydel Chapman officiating. Pallbearers will be David Barnett, Kyle Barnett, Robert Blandford, Austin Freeman, Brett Liles, Pat Liles, Kyle Logsdon, and Tommy Zant. Virginia will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with visitation Thursday September 29th, 2022 from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Bobby Snead, Kim Barnes, Audra Villalobos, Jodi Kauachi and Heart to Heart Hospice for their care and compassion in this difficult and emotional time.
