Dorothy passed into the spirit world on June 8. She was a longtime resident of Riverside Elders Home, Kanehsatake/ Oka.
Dorothy was the fourth Child of Thomas Martin and Margaret Decaire – Martin born in Kanehsatake. She is survived by a daughter Jan Hammack (Bob) of Palm Coast, Florida, her children Max, Rex (Katie), and Joy, and great-grand daughter- Sayla; a son Ron “Jake” Currie (Nan) of Nimpo Lake, B.C, Kimberlyn Robertson (Justin), Caitlyn and Collyn Currie.
She is also survived by her sister Pearl, many nieces, nephews, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters – Mary and Evelyn, and brothers – Eugene and Andrew.
As a young child Dorothy and her siblings were sent to Shingwauk Residential school in Saulte Ste Marie, in Ontario. Dorothy loved to learn; Maggie her Mother instilled the importance of education in a young Dorothy. Dorothy made a promise to her mother that she would get an education so she could help others. After she graduated from Shingwauk, she taught seventh and eighth graders in Sioux Lookout Indian Residential School. She loved helping others and returned to school to work on becoming an R.N. in Windsor, Ontario graduating in 1952 with her R.N. thereby fulfilling her promise to her Mother. She began helping others.
In Windsor, Dorothy met William “Ron” Currie, an Australian who became her husband. At first they lived in Detroit, and their first child Janet Margaret Currie was born. Then they relocated to California where their second child a son Ronnie a.k.a. Jake was born. She loved her work as R.N., and for more than 40 years she worked as an RN in a number of settings. She started her trek home to Kanehsatake in 2000 when she moved back to Canada and lived in Toronto. A few years later, she made her final move home when she returned to Kanehsatake/Oka.
Dorothy has been a resident at Riverside Elder’s Home for about 10 years where the residents and staff grew to love her. She was known for having a bubbly, vivacious personality. Dorothy was strong believer in God/Creator reading her bible and other spiritual materials. She respected and accepted others beliefs and opinions; she had an open mind. She made friends everywhere. She had a beautiful spirit and loved making others laugh and feel good. She will be truly missed.
