Alice Marie Nowlin, better known as A. M., even though she would tell you that she is not a morning person, was born in Ft. Scott, Kansas, on June 19, 1934, to Earl William and Lois Elizabeth (Bruner) Shubert.
A. M. graduated from Ft. Scott High School and lived in Wichita, Kansas, before moving with her husband, Lloyd Lambert Wright, and two small boys, Craig and Brian, permanently, to Oklahoma in 1962, where they attended and joined the Lakeside United Methodist Church. One more boy, Gary, joined the family as the only true Wright Okie. Mrs. Nowlin was a member at Lakeside for over sixty years and had only recently stopped singing in the choir due to health issues. She loved playing the piano and her rich, soprano voice with beautiful vibrato would often rise above the voices around her and could easily be picked out with its unique sound.
Later in life, after the passing of Mr. Wright, A. M. married Charles Eugene Nowlin and gained another son, Dick.
A. M. enjoyed sunflowers, the color yellow, classical piano music, spending time with family, dining out, and popcorn. While most people savor a good cup of coffee, it is safe to say that she relished a good pot of coffee, especially served in a fancy fine china cup and saucer. She was funny and loved humor, and we will all remember her little chuckle and twinkling eyes. Down to the last few days in her journey of life, the giggle was still there, and she was still thinking of and asking about her friends and loved ones.
A. M. made her journey to see Jesus this past Sunday, November 5, 2023, gaining her Sainthood on All Saints’ Day at the age of eighty-nine. The family is grateful to George Kelley who walked with her to the edge of Jordan and bid her farewell as she peacefully set her walker aside and transitioned to Heaven. She frequently joked about taking a jog and we are happy to think of her moving freely in Glory and singing in the Angel Choir along with Lloyd and his strong tenor voice.
A. M. is preceded in death by her parents, spouses Lloyd Wright and Charles Nowlin, and beloved son, Craig Loy Wright. She is survived by her children, Brian Phillip Wright and Lisa of Gulfport, Mississippi, Gary Lynn Wright of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dick Nowlin and Joy of Edmond, Oklahoma, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She will be missed greatly by a host of close friends and her church family, and particularly by her best friend, breakfast and supper buddy, Dean Hoel.
A celebration of A. M.’s life will be held at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 2925 NW 66th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73116, at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 10, 2023.
