James R “Bon” Tolbert passed away on March 28, 2025, in Oklahoma City. The son of James R. and Elizabeth McMahan Tolbert, Bon was born on December 14, 1962. As a student, his high-spiritedness made a lasting impression both on his teachers at Bishop McGuinness and New World and on the ducks at Casady.
Bon was a man who liked to live life his own way. Although raised in the city, he was happiest in the country. He loved his grandfather’s ranch in the Arbuckles and the home he later established for himself and his family in rural Bryan County. Bon never met a stranger, and whatever word means the opposite of “shy”, that was him.
Bon was deeply devoted to his family, and in particular to his three daughters who were the great lasting joys of his life. He was a serial entrepreneur, always hatching new plans to put his agile mind and skilled hands to work. He leaves behind indelible memories and an epic quantity of tools.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Miranda Leigh Tolbert. He is survived by his parents; his brothers Cannon Miles Tolbert (Molly) and Lee Mitchener Tolbert (Nicole); his sister Elizabeth Tolbert Wanamaker (Bruce); his daughters Alona Smith (J.C.) and Melinda Hill; and an armful of grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held on April 4th at Rose Hill Burial Park.
