Catherine Eva Hefner passed away peacefully on October 31st, 2026, with her daughters by her side. Born in Oklahoma City on March 27th, 1956, Catherine grew up alongside her three brothers, Charles Hefner, Robert Hefner IV, and Drew Bowers. She quickly developed a bold and dynamic personality that would stay with her throughout her life. If you knew Catherine, you knew she was multifaceted, with countless talents, interests, and characteristics that were uniquely her own.
Creative from the start, Catherine went on to study fine arts, pursuing her education at TASIS Fleming College in Florence, Italy where she developed her passion for ceramics and began a lifelong journey as an artist. Her ceramic plates became a signature of her creative expression, with pieces ranging from her iconic Picasso-inspired faces to her beloved holiday plates. Her creativity extended far beyond the pottery studio. It could be seen in the countless handmade Halloween costumes she created for her daughters, Lily Urice and Alexandra Urice, as well as the entire fleet of costumes she made for Lily's fourth-grade production of Oklahoma!. Her famously elaborate Halloween and Christmas decorations were equally unforgettable and will live on as one of Catherine's most iconic signatures, leaving an indelible mark on all the friends and family who got to experience them firsthand.
Catherine was also an avid animal lover, and the feeling was always mutual. Animals seemed naturally drawn to her. While working outside on her ceramics, she once had a blue jay that would repeatedly come and land on her shoulder. Owls were her favorite, and they always seemed to find their way into her backyard, where they made themselves at home. Over the years, her menagerie included dogs, cats, goats, horses, ducks, and plenty more. Wherever Catherine went, animals seemed to find her, and she had a special connection with them that remained a constant part of her spirit. Two of her favorite "holidays" in recent years were Discover Channel’s Shark Week and Fat Bear Week, the annual celebration and friendly competition highlighting Alaska's brown bears as they prepare for winter. Fitting favorites for someone whose love of animals knew no bounds.
Among Catherine's proudest accomplishments was a remarkable adventure she made alongside her father, Robert Hefner III. Together, they helped discover two life-size giraffe petroglyphs in the Sahara Desert, now known as the Dabous giraffes. These prehistoric carvings are recognized as the largest known animal petroglyphs in the world. The discovery also sparked a lifelong love of giraffes, adding yet another chapter to Catherine's collection of passions and interests.
Rumored to have caught the eye of Andy Warhol himself as a potential muse, Catherine was, in every sense, one of a kind. She leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured by any single accomplishment, but rather by the many ways she expressed herself, the things she created, the lives she touched, and the unmistakable mark she left on the world. Her creativity, individuality, and spirit will continue to live on through the countless memories and pieces of herself she shared with those who knew and loved her. From the ceramics she created to the animals she welcomed, the costumes she made, and the remarkable adventures she pursued, Catherine lived a life entirely her own. She leaves behind a world a little more colorful, unusual, and interesting than she found it.
Catherine's greatest love was her family, especially her daughters, Lily and Alexandra, to whom she passed along her creativity and unique individuality. The creative spirit she instilled in them will continue to live on through all they do. She also shared an extraordinary bond with her mother, Patricia Edwards, lovingly known as Gigi, a relationship that will forever remain one of the most meaningful parts of their lives. Her beloved poodle, Lulu, and her three grand-dogs, Georgie, Phillip, and Monkey, will also hold a special place in her heart and brought her endless joy.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who has reached out and offered love and support, with a special thank you to Rick Moses and Patrice Gallant, whose care and generosity have meant more than they will ever know.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests a donation be made in Catherine’s honor to The Sheldrick’s Wildlife Trust or The Oklahoma Humane Society.
