He grew up in Bartlesville, OK. An avid scout, he earned his Eagle rank by age 14. Later he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he served as treasurer of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Marketing. After college, Charlie served four and one-half years in the Army Counterintelligence, becoming a paratrooper and a German linguist with service in Germany and Vietnam. Charlie attained the rank of Captain. After his time in the service, Charlie earned two more degrees from Southern Methodist University and Oklahoma City University. His career in insurance began in 1973 and would continue for over 21 years, earning him numerous accolades in the field.
Charlie met Marlene in church choir while she was getting her master’s degree in vocal performance, and he was playing guitar in the bluegrass group known as “The Fine Wire Band.” They married on August 2, 1980. Music brought them together and continued to embody their wonderful life of over 42 years as they raised three beautiful children.
He was a devoted Methodist, a Disciple Bible study teacher and served on the board of Epworth Retirement center for many years. Charlie enjoyed sailing on his boat at Lake Hefner, playing guitar, chasing grandkids and in retirement revisited and thrived in his love of oil painting. He was first and foremost a steadfast man of God and a fervent family man.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister and survived by his wife Marlene; son Justin Hull with his wife Lauren and their children, Renner and Callan; son Scott Martin with his wife Gabi and their son David; and daughter Heather Graham with husband Dan and their children Taylor and Haley.
A service to honor Charlie’s life will be held, Thursday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church – Edmond Campus. Charlie’s selfless temperament and approachable outlook on life will always be remembered. He was loved dearly and will be missed by many.
