Clay “Nick” Barton Nixon Jr., 64, passed away on February 4, 2020, in Edmond, OK. Nick was born on July 28, 1955 to Clay “Bart” Barton Nixon Sr. and Evelyn (Bain) Nixon in Oklahoma City, OK.

Born and bred Oklahoman, the choice to attend the Oklahoma State then University of Oklahoma was easy. This is where he would earn his Bachelor of Architecture Degree. He met his wife Susan in St. Louis and they were married 32 years. They raised three exceptional children, Monica, Stephanie, and Phillip. Nick always gave it his all when it came to his children, he was always there for them through all the ups and downs. He loved them big and passed on life lessons that each of them will carry on as a legacy to him:

1. Be honest always, with everyone. 2. Work hard and always give your best effort. 3. Cherish your family and friends. 4. Don’t forget, all you ever have is family. 5. Don’t spend time doing things you don’t enjoy.

Nick and his father were great business partners. Balanced each other well. His father taught him drafting when he was young helping his father with plans. When he graduated college he worked for his father at Glover, Smith, Nixon, Bode and then they went out on their own and formed Nixon and Associates, Inc. an Engineering and Architectural firm, with Nick as the architect and Bart as the Engineer. It was a wonderful time. Their proudest moments together were when they received the Class A license to practice architecture in China and later receiving a Design Award from the government of Guangdong, China Government for their Olympic Stadium design. Honorable Mention for Design Excellence, Oklahoma Chapter AIA and the Solomon Andrew Layton Award for Masonry Design for their office building.

When he was not working he loved to cook and grill to the point of perfecting recipes and putting his spin on making them delicious and spicy. He also loved detailing his cars especially his Porsche, researching and finding the best products to have the most beautiful shine and sharing his finds with friends and neighbors. He loved to watch the Sooners and Cowboys especially when we lived in Minnesota and Pennsylvania. He was happy to have the opportunity to return to Oklahoma in 2018 after being away for 14 years. He was finally back in one of the places he loved. He had missed Oklahoma, his friends, and most of all the weather. He loved traveling to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, each year, to meet with old friends to go snowmobiling. He frequently traveled to Hawaii for work, and fell in love with the islands. This was the perfect place, a place he dreamed of living and said a perfect day for him would be toes in the sand, looking out a the ocean, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, and enjoying a margarita.

Nick is survived by wife, Susan Marie (Rose) Nixon of Edmond, OK; daughters, Monica and Stephanie Nixon of Virginia; son, Phillip Nixon of Edmond, OK; and brother, Gary Alan Nixon of Oklahoma City, OK.

A funeral mass will be held in honor of Nick’s life on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8005 Dorset Dr., Nichols Hills, OK 73120. Interment will be beside his parents at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Nick and his Dad were long time business competitors .... and both very well respected. I enjoyed meeting with Nick at trade shows ... and sometimes at clients offices in passing as we were making project presentations - still competing for the same project. :-) In later years, after many of our friendly meetings, we chose to work together and bond that friendship we had developed over the years. Several trips together, lots of smiles, good times and a great friendship.... you will be missed my dear friend!!!
