At the age of nine, Dal’s father, Columbus, passed away. Being that young and losing a parent is never easy, but Dal, and his older siblings, rose to the challenge by helping to provide for the family. In fact, while he was a full-time college student at OSU, he worked seven jobs in order to send money home to Mom. Dal dearly loved his mother and so it’s no wonder he joined her in heaven on her birthday.
After High School, Dal enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Cold War while being stationed in Germany. He was always proud of his time spent in the military.
Dal met the love of his life, Carolyn Long, while attending Oklahoma State University. They were married for sixty-one years. Together they raised five wonderful children, Cheryl, Angela, Brenda, Robert “Bob”, and Beth. Some of his proudest moments were when Bob made Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and when all five children graduated from college.
He attended Oklahoma State University and Bethany Nazarene College where he graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Religion. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University and his PhD ABD in Higher Education Administration from Oklahoma State University.
Dal’s calling was to the ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. He pastored 41 years to churches in Oswego, Kansas; Lamar, Missouri; Okmulgee, OK; Tulsa, OK and Fort Worth, Texas. He also taught High School Mathematics and Physics. He then served as a hospice chaplain for eight years.
He is preceded in death by his father, Columbus Bryson Newberry; mother, Mary Ellen (Collins) Newberry; his siblings Ruth, Bill, Dolly, and Robert Wayne; and granddaughter Karla Beth-Ann Stone.
Dal is survived by his wife, Carolyn Joy (Long) Newberry; daughters, Cheryl Stone and husband, Bryan, Angela Davidson and husband, Larry, Brenda Knutson and husband, Miles, Beth White and husband, Richard; son, Robert Newberry and wife Deborah; eight grandchildren, Douglas, Brooke, Kendra, Brianna, Courtney, Amberly, Ashleigh, and Austin; four great-grandchildren, Rylee, Adella, Brooks and Carson; sister, Jequita Martin; and brothers, Lum and Carl Newberry. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews to cherish his memory. He is rumored to be the favorite uncle in the family.
A memorial service in honor of Dal will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 N.W. Expressway, Oklahoma City, OK 73162.
