Donald was born on September 3, 1947 in Oklahoma City to Daniel and Dorothy (Ward) Bortz. He attended Midwest City public schools graduating with the class of 1966. After high school he attended OSU-Tech in Okmulgee where he studied diesel mechanics. In 1969, he answered the call of his country and was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and attended basic training in San Diego, CA. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Linda (Campbell) Bortz and together they raised three children – Cindy, Cecilia and John.
Donald was a man of many skills which led him to careers at Sutherlands and Big L Lumber. In 1986, he took a job at Medical Arts Lab (later called Lab Corp) where he worked as a courier and often joked that he drove 365 miles a day, five days a week, in rain, snow and sun. In 2009, Donald retired to be with his grandson with whom he was absolutely inseparable.
Donald was a member of the Moore American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed eating breakfast weekly with his buddies at Boomerang’s and Mama Carol's Kitchen and fishing on Kitchen Lake with his grandson, even though they never caught much. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family and never missed any sporting or school events of his grandson, Nicholas. He will be remembered as a jokester who loved playing harmless tricks on his friends and family and a patriotic man who was proud of his service to his country. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents: Daniel David and Dorothy Jean (Ward) Bortz and his brother: Daniel David Bortz III.
He is survived by his wife: Linda Lee (Campbell) Bortz, daughters: Cindy Hawkins and husband Phillip and Cecilia Bortz, son: John Bortz, grandson: Nicholas Hawkins, brother: Nick Bortz and partner Sandy, and adopted daughter: Dee Engle and husband Shannon.
