Doris Marie Martin

May 25, 1929July 5, 2018

Doris Marie Martin was born May 25, 1929 at Good Hope, Illinois to Earl Laverne Stroops and Rachel Isabella Stambaugh Stroops. She grew up in western Illinois and attended elementary school there. Unfortunately she had to leave school after sixth grade to help at home. She took great pride in her work especially her ironing.

On November 23, 1949 Doris married her one and only, Marvin Lee Martin. The couple resided in Aledo, Illinois. They had one child, Robert Lee Martin, born November 12, 1951. She was a devoted mother, instilling in her son the importance of education. In 1959, the family moved to Davenport, Iowa. Doris worked for many years as a grocery clerk and had many devoted customers who wouldn't allow anyone other than Doris to help them. Her passion was music. She enjoyed all kinds of music, but Elvis was her favorite. She also enjoyed looking for bargains at garage sales. After 65 years of marriage Marvin passed away in 2015. In 2017, due to declining health, Doris moved to Edmond, Oklahoma to be near her son. She died July 5, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City after a brief illness. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents and all five brothers; Floyd, Clyde, Earl Jr., Bobbie and Donnie. She is survived by her son Robert Lee Martin and his wife Joyce, five grandchildren: Jared Martin, Sarah Martin, Rachel Fink, Rebecca Blakely, Naomi Moore, and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at Hahn Cook/Street & Draper, Oklahoma City on July 12, 2018 at 10am with burial on July 14, 2018 at Memorial Park in Davenport, Iowa.

My deepest condolences to Doris' family and friends. I'm sorry I didn't get to know Doris. She looks like she was a lot of fun! I am a family historian for my Stroop family and just found out she is my 4th cousin. She had to be a great lady because she and my mother shared the same maiden name...Doris Stroops...well, actually, my mom's maiden name was Stroop...without the "s" at the end. The Pittsburgh family was Stroop.

So many great memories with you grandma. Going to garage sales, listening to Elvis, eating peanut butter toast after cereal. It was extra special that Claire got to meet you and you let her play with Teddy. We all love you and miss you!!

I have only known Doris for a bit less than a year, but she was a bright spot in my days as I care for my own mother. Doris let me know the first day that I met her that music was “her thing” and she loved all the music performances I watched her enjoy. I played Elvis songs on my ipad for her, and she often told me that Elvis wasn’t just a great talent and handsome, but he was a good boy! She loved her friend Teddy, and no one took better care of a friend than she did Teddy. She joked that she would never let Teddy help her get to Iowa, because, as she said, “Teddy is a terrible navigator”. Her love for her son was apparent in how she spoke of him...she was such a proud mom! I loved Doris and I will miss her very much, but I know she is reunited with her husband and family and is celebrating their reunion now.
