Dorothy Jean (Coffman) McKean passed from this earth at the age of 79 on October 8, 2017. She was born March 19, 1938 in Idabel, Oklahoma to James V. and Ruby Coffman. At the age of 5, the family moved to Oklahoma City. The old adage "you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl" was definitely true with Mom. She never shied away from getting her hands dirty and loved the outdoors. She also had an adventurous side to her, racing stock cars in the powderpuff class at Taft stadium in her younger days. Through her working years and before becoming a homemaker, she had several jobs that she especially enjoyed including working for Daisy May Lures and crafting custom fishing rods for Wilcox. That job and many of her other qualities definitely made her a "keeper" in her husband’s eyes. She married her best friend and fishing buddy, Allen Page McKean on July 23, 1960. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Tonya, Lonnie, Rick and Stacey. She was a very loving, caring and hard-working Wife, Mother and Grandmother.
Mom was always the disciplinarian and you knew you were in trouble when she told you to go get a switch from the tree. Besides raising children, she also had many gifts and talents. Her hands were always busy, making Allen a new custom fishing rod, growing her garden, decorating the windows for the family business, creating something memorable for her grandchildren, taking them to the lake cabin and showing them how to catch a fish, adding some new plant to the greenhouse at the house or cross-stitching. She loved to get her hands in the soil. During many of their travels she would bring back a clipping of some plant, hoping customs wouldn't find it at the border. Her passions were sidelined when macular degeneration took away her vision that allowed her to enjoy her many hobbies. Although we will miss her greatly, we are happy to know her body has been made whole again and her eyesight restored. We can only imagine how beautiful her garden will be when we see her again. Love you Mom. She was preceded by her loving husband Allen of 51 years, her mother and father, her two brothers Bobby and Bill and their spouses, and her sister Juanita Copeland.
Dorothy is survived by daughter Tonya Bell and husband Garland of Edmond, son Lonnie and wife Leslie of Oklahoma City, son Rick of Allen, TX and daughter Stacey of Oklahoma City; 8 grandchildren, Whitney and Matthew Cain, Jenny and Mark Smith, Landon McKean, Lexi Bell, Rachael McKean, Taylor Hopper, Sydney Bell and Lauren McKean who she loved taking to the lake and spending time with. She had 6 great-grandchildren. Dorothy also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
