After graduation from Michigan State University, he entered the Air Force. Ed had several different duty stations including a year in Vietnam and ten years at the Pentagon. In Washington, D.C., he met his wife, Janet. An opportunity came up for him to fly with AWACS and he took it, moving to Oklahoma and spending five years as a Mission Crew Commander. After retiring from the Air Force, Ed was a social worker for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) for sixteen years working in child welfare, child support and other areas. He retired from DHS December 2005 but after three years of retirement, he needed to do something, so he began driving for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) transporting veterans to-and-from the VA hospital for appointments. That led Ed to his final career as the Department Service Officer for the DAV. He spent nine years helping veterans apply for benefits, file appeals for denied benefits and anything else that came up. He was a member of the DAV, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Ed enjoyed participating in sports such as skiing, whitewater canoeing, racquetball, and squash. He enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved Detroit Lions.
Survivors include Janet, his wife of 49 years, his sister Shirley Smith of Middleburg, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. After cremation, he will be buried in Newkirk Cemetery, Shreve, OH. Ed will be missed. Memories may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/oklahoma-city/edward-bucknell-11072816
