Ellen Joyce Moberly Grossman, age 91, passed away July 8, 2024 in Oklahoma City after a short illness. A visitation will be held Monday July 15, 2024 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73141. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 10:00AM. A burial will occur Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 11:00AM at Arlington Memory Gardens, 3400 N Midwest Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73141.
Ellen Joyce Moberly was born on February 4, 1933, in Okarche, OK, to Daisy McCully Scott Moberly and William Bryan Moberly. She was the fourth of five children. She attended Corner Door School until 6th grade, where she joined classmates at Calumet and graduated in 1951. She played basketball and made many lifelong friends.
Ellen moved to El Reno, Oklahoma, after graduation, where she lived with Aunt Rosa and Uncle Bill, working at the lumber yard and then Woolworths. She met and married Eugene E. McDowell in 1952. Three children were born of this union: Janyce Joyce, Regina Rhea, and Bradley Eugene.
She was a homemaker and took in ironing for supplemental income. Then in 1967 began working for Dr. Floyd in Yukon as a receptionist and insurance clerk until 1972.
Ellen and Gene divorced in 1969.
Ellen moved to Bethany in the summer of 1971, after her mother’s death, to help care for her father and began working for William Harsha, MD, as an insurance clerk in 1972. She worked there until she retired in 1992.
She loved to dance and would go 1-3 times a week. She and Aunt Cuma Jones had lots of fun.
She married Joe Grossman in March 1982 and moved to Newalla, Oklahoma. She enjoyed living in the country, enjoying their dogs, wildlife, and traveling. After retirement, she volunteered at the Mid-Del Food Pantry.
She enjoyed people and making friends everywhere. She loved reading and always gifted books to her family.
Ellen and Joe sold their place in Newalla, moving into an Edmond independent living facility in 2010. Ellen later moved to a different independent living facility in Oklahoma City after Joe passed away in 2012, which was closer to family.
After a serious illness, she moved to Concordia Assisted Living in February 2020 where she received excellent care. Ellen enjoyed bingo, bus trips, the staff, and her many friends at her new home.
She also enjoyed trips with her children and her family, which gave her so much happiness, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She loved her siblings, nieces, and nephews and enjoyed every opportunity to see them.
Ellen is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Grossman. Her daughter Regina Rhea McDowell. Parents, William Bryan Moberly and Daisy McCully Scott Moberly. Her brother Wilford Moberly, sister-in-law Margaret Moberly, brother Donald Moberly, sister-in-law Gladys Moberly, and Heather Wood, brother Leon Moberly, sister Wilma Blackburn, brother-in-law Kermit Blackburn, two infant brothers, numerous in-laws, and friends.
She is survived by her children Janyce Joyce Rhoads (Stan Rhoads) of Piedmont, Oklahoma; Bradley E. McDowell (Kay McDowell) of Warr Acres, 9 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
