Frances Ruth Brazil passed away October 30, 2022 at the Home on the Rogue Care Home in Grants Pass, Oregon. She had resided there for two years. She was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma October 18, 1932 to Walter and Bertha Clingman. She was preceded in death by her husband R. Scott Brazil in 2021. She was a much loved mom in two families, the Spurlock‘s which she started in 1952 and the Brazil‘s which she married into in 1981.
She is survived by a son Randall Spurlock of Oregon and three stepsons Russell Brazil (Dee Ann) of Arizona, Darrell Brazil (Kylette) of Oregon and Kevin Brazil (Lorrie) of California, 18 grandchildren across the blended family and numerous great grandchildren.
Frances was preceded in death by sons Roger Spurlock and Richard Spurlock, daughter Rhonda Hayes and their father Joe Spurlock all of Oklahoma.
Frances grew up in Oklahoma City, OK, Colorado, Wyoming and various other locales as her father was an oilman and a miner and he took his family with him. She attended and graduated from Capitol Hill Senior High School in 1950. She enrolled at Oklahoma City University in 1950 had four children in the interim and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Music degree.
Music, particularly piano and voice, were her passions. She had a strong faith she carried quietly but ever present. Between 1957 and 1969, Frances was a homemaker, a performer (a vocalist and a pianist) in Oklahoma and various other states. As well as a part-time teacher and a student at The University of Oklahoma where she received a Master of Music Education degree in 1969. The family moved to Long Island, NY in 1969 so Frances could pursue her career in education and music via an apprenticeship and a chance to understudy at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, NY. In 1972 the family moved to Edmond, OK where Frances took the position of Vocal Instructor at Central State University (now UCO) which she was to hold for 9 years. In this time she became divorced. In 1980 at her 30th high school reunion she became reacquainted with an old flame, R. Scott Brazil. They fell in love and married in June 1981. This precipitated a move to Southern California where another season of life began, a new family and a life of change and travel.
Living in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Los Altos, CA, owning and operating a bed and breakfast inn (Fensalden Inn) in Albion, CA, Tucson, AZ, Clark, WY. Then a bit of wandering RV style about the country. Frances lived the last 38 or so years of her life battling and adjusting to the disease MS (Multiple Sclerosis) as it claimed all of her physical abilities. She did it with the same grace and smile that was always present in her life.
The family would like to thank the people that were most involved in her care the last few years Kylette Powers, Joni Sager, Jessica Wheaton and Clint Sager.
A service to celebrate Frances’ life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 12 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
