Frances Jeanette Shear Hutton was born on Halloween October 31, 1930 in Bryan, Texas while her dad was a senior at Texas A&M. The family, parents and older brother, George, moved to Shilder, Oklahoma where her younger brother, John “Paddy” was born. Then they moved to Oklahoma City, where Fran attended Crooked Oak School. A graduate in 1948, she attended Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches, Texas for two years. Then she graduated from Aradwahe School of Medical Technology in St. Louis Missouri and worked at Wesley Hospital Laboratory at its original location at 8th and Harvey Street in Oklahoma City. It was there she met and married her co-worker Auldon Francis Hutton on December 28, 1952. The family was started with Michael Auldon was born July 14, 1955, Lori Ann came along August 7th 1958. Deedra Lea joined them November 20, 1960.
During their almost 24 years of marriage, she and Auldon built a home on 61st Terrace where their kids built lifelong friendships with several kids and their families. After moving to 70th Street, Fran worked and Auldon traveled for work. Auldon’s sudden passing left Fran to provide for herself and kids. She made “good choices” which allowed the kids to prosper and bond with her. A great balancing act that only she could accomplish.
Fran was a beautiful daughter for taking such good care of her parents as they grew older. She nursed her father through a brain tumor before his passing and took care of her mom for several years by keeping helpers with her mother so she could stay at home. Her husband, Auldon, helped when he could until his passing.
Fran kept working at the Oklahoma Allergy Clinic during this time as well. She eventually put her mother in a nursing home but visited her most every day to make sure she and all the other residents were well taken care of, and if she found out they weren’t well she went “Fran” on them and made sure they didn’t make that mistake again!
She also was a wonderful sister and took care of her older brother, George, when he had cancer. She moved him in with her and took care of him as best she could. Again, doing all of this while raising the three “Stooges” of her own, Mike, Lori and DeeDee!
Fran loved to travel. Her first international trip was to Cuba in the 1950’s. She went to France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, New England, Scotland, Ireland, France, South America, Israel, Japan and of course to any duty station where Frank and Lori Higgins found themselves.
Our mom sent us letters of support no matter where we (or she) were. Those were in lieu of a long face to face discussion, but much appreciated.
She also invested a lot of time and fun experiences in her grandchildren. Being a grandmother was a special joy for her. Ian Michael was her first grandchild, and she travelled to California to visit him as much as she could while working. Once she retired, she traveled to wherever he lived to spend time with him.
Her next little joys were Christian Auldon, Caylee Joy, and Chelsea Don. She made sure she spent time with them all and planned fun times and made good memories. Fran also received two “bonus granddaughters” in Christy and Heather when Frank joined the family. Fran’s great Grandchildren include Brentley Retter, Bennett Retter, Chandler Cooke, Quinn Cooke, Selah De Jesus, a new De Jesus on the way, Nyellie Pleasant, Emiley Horton, Grace Horton, Major Horton, Hunter Crumpton, Colton Crumpton, Calleigh Crumpton.
Fran loved watching all her grandkids play sports or any activity they were involved with. She bought and read them a book named “I’m glad I’m your Grandma”. Her quote from this book is on the program. This is what she said… “I believe in children. There is faith in their eyes, love in their touch and hope in their attitudes. I love you all” – Grandma Hutton!
Fran spent a lot of time with her high School friends and they called themselves the “River Rats”. She really enjoyed their class reunions and trips to the river. They were a close knit group and stayed together over the years. Her best friend Pat Stanley (born 8 days apart) is still her best friend today. They tried to talk to each other each day to make sure the other was doing OK. They talked up until her last week of life.
If there was a good cause or story, mom was at the front of promoting it or talking about it. There are a few articles she wrote to display this determination. Some of her hobbies were shining shoes at the Pacer Center each Monday. She had a lot of fun doing this and met lots of fun people. We went to Germany and Alaska where she actually met people that she shined shoes for in Oklahoma! She always seemed to run into someone she knew. She also enjoyed collecting bricks, coins, stamps and of course taking pictures. She won a few prizes for some of her pictures, even of a dandelion!
She had a knack for being funny and quick wit to most that she met and made them laugh or smile. She was even doing these even after she moved to assisted living. They all love her stories and she only required that they bring her a beer for the party!
Good times, good life and good memories from our precious mom. Many fun names will always be attached to her. Frannie Photo, Old Lady and Franopolis, Granny Franny, Aunt Picklenose but the one we love the most is that we get to call her mom and grandma!
We will always keep you near in our hearts and minds. Thank you for loving us Frances Jeanette Shear Hutton! We will ALWAYS love you!
