

Genevieve Noreene Burns was born July 24, 1928 in Wilson, Oklahoma and was called to her Heavenly home on November 30, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Sylvia Hennigan, and five siblings. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jay Burns, and her daughter, Mary Jacobs and her husband Steve, who reside in Clovis, CA, and her daughter, Betty Neale, and her husband Keith, of Stilwell, OK. She has two granddaughters, Amber Ledbetter of Shawnee, OK, and Stephanie Finch of England. She was also the proud great-grandmother to three sweet girls, Ashlyn Ledbetter, Allison Ledbetter, and Zoe Finch. Genevieve graduated from Wilson High School and went on to earn a BS in Home Economics from Texas College for Women in 1951. She then began teaching school at Nowata, OK until 1953 when she married her husband, Jay Burns. She continued teaching at Catholic schools in Claflin and Wichita, KS. In 1965 she and Jay settled in Oklahoma City where she was a substitute teacher at St. Charles Borromeo School. Genevieve’s greatest joys in life came from her deep faith in God, spending time with family and friends, and being a servant Christian. She was very active in her church, and volunteered for the Troy and Dolly Smith Caner Center as well as at the Integris Baptist Pro Cure Center. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. She was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed making newborn blankets for her granddaughters and great-granddaughters. Genevieve loved watching OU football games and Thunder basketball games on television. She loved playing games with friends and family, such as Bridge and Dominos. She almost never missed a day solving the daily cryptoquote and daily crossword puzzles. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
