

George was born in rural Konawa on March 16, 1941, to Lena Harjo and Lina (Powell) Harjo. He attended high school in Wolf, Oklahoma. In June of 1961 George joined the United States Army, where he was a rifle sharpshooter, Private First Class. He was honorably discharged on March 31, 1964. George married Kathleen “Kathy” Martin in Shawnee, Oklahoma on March 3, 1972. They made their home in Oklahoma City. George and Kathy had one son Franklin George Harjo. George went to work at Oklahoma Roofing and Sheet Metal in 1983 dedicating 25 loyal years of service to the company, retiring in 2007.
George was a proud member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, Tusekia Harjo band. George was a faithful member of Victory Baptist church where he still maintained his original family camp house. He found great joy in attending native churches. He could frequently be found attending services at High Springs, Sand Creek, and numerous other churches. He enjoyed watching OU Sports and Thunder Basketball.
George loved family gatherings where he could visit with his countless nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, extended family and too many other relatives to count. George was a hard worker and was always willing to lend a helping hand to family or anyone in need. He had three special nieces that stepped up and helped take care of him when his health began to fail, Angela Snyder, Fawna Harjo, and Katheryn Harjo.
George was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kathy, son Franklin, grandson Rutger Harjo that he was raising, two sisters Sylvia Harjo and Betty Tanyan, eight brothers Jacob Harjo, Kenneth Harjo, Franklin Harjo, Johnson Harjo Richard Harjo, Newman Harjo, Andrew Harjo, Albert Harjo and Leo Tiger.
He is survived by one sister Donna Kay Renton and husband William of Seminole, one brother Jimmy Dean Harjo and significant other Susan Gentry of Seminole, his special companion of 15 years Mary “Charlene” Wood, one grandson Jared Spain of OKC, along with numerous nieces, nephews, a multitude of family and dear friends.
Those serving as pall bearers will be William Snyder Jr, Jimmy Harjo Jr, Lincoln Jones, Kirk Fye, Keenan Fourhorns, Greg Dorsey, Derrick Reed and Paulo Gonzalez.
Honorary pall bearers are Jimmy Harjo Sr, Clifton Tanyan, Roy Carbitcher, Jack Hulbutta, Wally Coon, Jack Burns, Nathan Barber, Sachemeche Harjo, Franky Harjo and Sonny Harjo.
Uncle George is loved by so many and will be missed dearly.
Visitation will be held at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, 7720 South Pennsylvania Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73159, US, on July 6, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a wake service starting at 6 p.m.
A Funeral Service will take place at Victory Baptist Church 2301 SE 15th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73129, on July 7, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
A Graveside Service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 500 SW 104th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73139, US, on July 7, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
