Grace Adele Mohr Miller, a resident of Oklahoma City for most of her life, passed away on November 29, 2016 in Houston, Texas. Adele was born in Oklahoma City on November 16, 1919 to Hugo and Ioda Mohr. She graduated from the original Classen High School in 1937. She attended the University of Oklahoma for her freshman year after high school, but wasn’t able to return the following year. She pledged Alpha Phi Sorority, and was involved in Alpha Phi events for most of her life. One of her greatest desires was to return to school and finish her degree at some point, which she did, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Oklahoma in 1986 at age 67.
During WWII she worked at Douglas Aircraft. After the war she worked as a secretary (with her sister Dorothy) in an architecture firm named Coston, Frankfurt, and Short, where she met her husband who was an architect in the firm. She stayed home to raise her two children and then as they began junior high and high school, she went to work again - first at Taylor Publishing, a yearbook publishing company, and then as a legal secretary/office manager at Bulla, Horning, and Johnson – a law firm.
Adele was predeceased by her husband, Bruce Miller, and her 4 sisters Annabelle Massengill, Doris Mohr, Dorothy Holmes, and Betty Ames. She is survived by her son, Rick Miller and his wife Nancy of Houston, TX; her daughter Dana Baker and her husband Ron of Medford, MA; her grandson, Tim Baker and his wife Kate of Reading, MA; and her granddaughter, Melissa Baker of Hanover, NH. She also had 14 nieces and nephews.
In the first 10 years of her marriage she lived in many places across the country - San Diego, CA; Newport, RI; Virginia Beach, VA (while her husband was in the navy during the Korean War); Brookline, MA (while her husband pursued a graduate degree in architecture at MIT); St. Louis, MO; and Tulsa, OK, before returning to Oklahoma City in 1961.
Perhaps living in so many places birthed in her a love of travel. After her husband passed away at the young age of 55 in 1981, she began traveling more frequently - two of her more memorable trips were to Russia & Paris, France. But one of her most favorite “hobbies” was volunteering at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. She loved being a docent. She was so excited when the Chihuly Glass Exhibit became part of their permanent collection. Also, she and her sister Betty were zealous Oklahoma Sooner football fans and attended home games whenever they could.
For the last years of her life Adele received loving care from Seven Acres Senior Care in Houston, TX. The family is so grateful to the staff. A Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 3, 2016 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City; St. Luke’s United Methodist Church of Houston, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
