Born on August 14, 1934, in Artesia, California, to Melvin and Christine (Vaughn) Uffen, Jack’s childhood was marked by the warmth of summer months spent with his grandparents. It was there, under his grandmother’s wing, that he developed his lifelong love for the outdoors, and under his grandfather’s guidance, he was introduced to the oil industry—the trade that would define his professional life.
Jack learned the industry from the ground up, starting with the humble but essential task of digging ditches. His dedication and expertise eventually took him all over the world, where he served in various distinguished roles. His spirit of adventure led him to Alaska, where he transitioned from the oil fields to the open sea. As the owner of a commercial fishing vessel, he found great pride and joy in taking his boys out to work alongside him on the ocean, creating memories that would last a lifetime. He loved the outdoors, avid golf and was an expert bowler.
On April 4, 1975, Jack married Barbara (Gann) Miller. Their union brought together a large, blended family, and Jack embraced the role of father to Barbara’s children with the same commitment he applied to everything in his life.
Jack was a man who commanded respect through his integrity and was deeply loved by those who knew him. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Paul Uffen; and beloved children, Jon Uffen, Robin Uffen Mayes, Jay Dee Miller, and Bobby Gene Miller, Jr. Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his sons, Melvin Thomas "Tom" Uffen and Jack Venable Uffen; his daughter, Cindy Hibbs ; and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward.
He was loved by many and respected by all. He will be deeply missed.
